Dark Tail Lamps (again!)

I realized this has been covered, and some are still trying to locate this style of tail lights. Is there any reason a 2017 model tail lamp would NOT work on a 2021 LT1? They look identical in design.

I have placed an order here, and had to provide the VIN, but I have no idea if Chevydirectparts will actually verify fitment before they ship, IF they actually have them.

I'm kind of expecting them to say they are out of stock, or they won't fit.

Hm, I read somewhere that the electrical connector was different on post-refresh (2019+) cars and the bumper cutout dimensions may not be identical either, as the bumper design was modified as well. The official compatibility status of these lamps is 2016-2018.

That doesn't mean you can't try to hack them in, and even if that doesn't work, they are in very high demand. Assuming you're actually able to get a set, you'll have an easy time selling them if need be.

good luck, let me know if you get them. i called the company first before ordering. they told me they didnt have them as they are no longer made. i asked then why they don't update it and they said they dont care as they may come back into production.

I think you would need to get a 2018 rear bumper and maybe a few other things. It might look a little odd with the cutouts in the bumper that were intended for the 2019+ lights. That would be great if you could do it without all of the extra stuff.

Gen5 sells connectors to make 2019 tails work on 2016-2018... So that says there is something different in the connector which means it won’t be a quick swap even the other way around. The bumper would also be an issue as your car has that little piece sticking up that protrudes into your current tail. With your tails on a 2016 it leaves a large gap. With 2017 tails on your 2021 it probably won’t let the 2017 tails even sit down flush at the bumper area.

Call Gen5diy and have them make a custom connector to switch too the pre refresh taillights.

I changed out a friends 19 ZL1 taillights couple of months back.
New pre refresh bumper is needed
New Gen5diy connectors are needed
Good BodyShop is needed, cause on the ZL1 you have to switch over the parking sensors to the pre refresh bumper and the location and fitment is different. Body man had to make custom attachments for the sensors so they dont fall out.
He hasnt had any issues at all since then.

Seems to be par for the course these days, unfortunately. These online stores use older catalogs, plus they tend to accept orders on any part that is not discontinued and only then attempt to source the items from GM.

they might be hoping that GM makes them again, but to many sites still list them. at least most say they are out of stock.

GM discontinued the set, however, they offer them under the part # listed on the light. You can go to your local dealer or order them through almost an online GM site. Keep in mind that they might have some defects. I had a dealer out of state order a set for me and they arrived with marks and shavings on the inner part of the lens. The dealer sent me a second set and they were even worse. They didn't want to send me another set due to the shipping costs so I had no choice but to keep the defective lights. If you order through your local dealer, this shouldn't be an issue, however, they are going to charge you $400 + per light. You can find them $100 cheaper online. Parts #s are 84136775 (Left Light) and 84136776 (Right Light). Check for availability because I tried ordering the right light last week and was told they didn't have it in the warehouse. The dealer who I've been working with sent me a set a couple of weeks ago so I don't know how accurate that is. Hope this helps

Thanks for sharing your experience on the smoked OEM tail lights! I've been debating for the past couple of months where or not to pull the trigger and purchase them.

I knew about ordering by individual parts vs the 84316777 discontinued kit. Based on your post, now I know why they have the core charge and want you to return your original (red) ones. I'm guessing they take the red ones and rework them thus the reason for the defects.
