19/20 2SS DRLs - Help please!

Hey, I'm hoping you can help an Aussie out.

HSV removed the lower DRLs (Bumper DRLs / LED fog light strip) when the car was converted from left to right for the ANZ market.

I have added them back in, but the result I got was unexpected, so I was wondering if someone with a 19 or 20 2SS could compare what I have to what a US/CA car has. As it has never been an option here, I have nothing local to compare it to.

Auto - daylight conditions
Headlight DRLs: On
Lower DRLs: Off <---------------------------------- This????

Auto - Dark / night time conditions
Headlight DRLs: On
Lower DRLs: On

Manual parking lamps
Headlight DRLs: On - Low intensity?
Lower DRLs: On - Low intensity?

Manual head lamps
Headlight DRLs: On
Lower DRLs: On

I’m pretty sure it’s the same across all DRL’s in the states but mine do this,

Daytime: All DRL’s on

Night: All DRL’s on low intensity with HID/LED headlight on

Manual parking lamps: ALL DRL’s on

Manual headlights: All DRL’s on low intensity with HID/LED headlight on

Thanks!

That's basically what I was expecting mine to be like, but I got the strange combo of working and not.

All good though, I got a harness from Gen5DIY a while back that should do what you mentioned, but I thought I would try with the existing hardware before using the custom cable (I didn't know there was existing hardware when I ordered the cable from Gen5DIY).

I have observed following on my 19 ZL1

Auto Daytime:
All DRL's on - High Intensity
\
`-> When in park all DRL's off

Manual Parking Lights:
All DRL's on - Low Intensity

Manual & Auto Headlights:
All DRL's on - Low Intensity

I'd say the harness maybe acting differently as HSV has completely changed the front bumper harness to delete the DRL's and other devices. This may cause the Gen5DIY harness designed for a US car that's, "unmodified" if you will, to act in the way you are observing.

One more question. Do your side markers ever turn off? We have working side markers from factuary, but they are always on with the car.

And thanks for the reply, I'm trying to get as close to US as possible (while sticking to AU law), and it is hard to find out what your cars do, as it is the small details that nobody mentions, and I haven't been able to see in youtube videos.

I was told that HSV totally replaced the bumper harness and there wasn't any plugs for the bumper DRL's, so I had a custom Gen5DIY harness made.

When we got round to fitting it, we were surprised to find the plugs there, just covered up and cable tied out of the way. When we plugged in the DRL's into the original plugs, it looked to be working, pressing unlock turned the bumper DRL's on, so we put the front end back together without using the Gen5DIY solution. It was only after we finished up we noticed the issue.

I am 99.9% sure the custom harness will work fine, but I want to check all the details before I take my bumper apart again as it was a bit of a mission to do it.

Its definitely odd that the harness found on the car is acting that way, but the side markers on the car are turned on when the manual parking lights or headlights, auto or manual, are turned on. They are only on during these conditions auto daytime will have the DRL's in high intensity with no side markers on.

Perfect, thank you for all your help.

Auto Daytime:
In park - All DRL's off
Otherwise - All DRL's on - High Intensity
Side markers - Off

Side markers - On

Manual & Auto Headlights:

Side markers - On

All seems to be in order there! Have you considered finding a US spec front bumper harness if the Gen5DIY fails to help the situation?

Yep definitely. I will get it working, one way or the other.

But the Gen5DIY solution doesn't feed off the bumper harness, it plugs into each headlight with a cable going down to power the lower DRL, so I cannot see how it wouldn't work. It has been wired to mimic the headlight DRL, so I should get the above, except the side markers will always be on.

But I am hoping to get a multimeter out and find out how the bumper harness compares to the Gen5 harness, to see what the difference is for each setting.

Sounds like a good idea, hope it works out!
