Hood Liner and Soap Scum

Hey guys, so I've had issues with keeping my hood liner looking nice and at this point I'm thinking of simply removing it all together. The issue I'm having is soap scum gets in through the SS's hood nostrils and makes quite a mess. It looks pretty nasty.

It's from the touchless car wash I go through during the winter, no heated garage makes it impossible to keep my car clean, so the touchless helps. But now I want to clean my engine bay and I just know I won't be able to get the liner looking new again.

Has anyone removed their liner? Is there any cons to removing it? Is there any aftermarket liners that I could to in place of it?

Have you tried hosing it down? Others have used simple green diluted with water to get it clean.

Not this year, last year I did, still there was a faint outline left. I use Meguiar's APC and a brush. Unfortunately the brush I was using was too aggressive and tore up part of the liner. After scrubbing and letting it dry, there was a faint outline where a majority of the scum was left behind. If I clean it again I have a feeling an outline will still remain. I've heard of people painting their liners because they haven't been able to clean the scum that can collect on them.

Edit: maybe not paint, but tire foam apparently works to "dress" the liner. I may go that route. Maybe. I'm curious to see what it looks like with no liner.

I removed mine. I did it only because I wanted to hear more S/C whine but I haven't had any issues so far. Its been about three months. The only issue you will run into is the underside of the hood isn't painted in some parts so it isn't pretty if you go to shows or pop your hood for friends.

That’s what I was wondering. Darn!

I'd try a liberal coat of scotch guard upholstery spray on the liner to keep the dirt and water from soaking in.

Not once it's dry, but the aerosol carrier may be. It dries pretty quick though. I wouldn't hesitate to try it.

Any updates on how to clean and keep the liner from getting the white scum again? It sucks to pop the hood at car shows with this problem!

Yep, remove it. lol

Seriously, I removed mine and it looks a lot better than the scummy liner. Here's some pictures.

??

Maybe it's the soap you use?

My car is a little over 2 years old and 2 winters. No staining at all on the liner.

Touchless car wash during the winter.
