After almost 3 months of waiting I finally received and installed my replacement dash panel. Luckily the install wasn’t too bad. I only thought about recording this when I was most of the way done, but if anybody needs help with this swap let me know and I can at least get a picture tutorial up.

Happy holidays guys! I got the Camaro SS bomber jacket from my family and bought myself some weathertechs for the ride.

Dash job looks good. Maybe I missed a post somewhere....why'd you have to replace it?

I bet swapping the button was easier with the dash panel out! And looks like it wasn’t too bad of an install.

Going to beat him to the punch. If I recall correctly...When he tried to do the button swap originally and had some scuffing he used a heat gun to try and smooth things out. Ended up warping the material and button I think.

Thanks Adam - pretty close. The previous owner tried to pry out the original start button and gave up. I tried to fix the scuffs with a heat gun (and was doing a pretty damn good job if I say so myself), but I got overzealous trying to take out the last big gouge and ended up warping the plastic. Looking back on the whole experience I should have just left the couple of scuffs haha.

The biggest PITA about the whole swap was moving the trim over from the HUD controls. It looks like a “one time install” kind of piece as there are no release tabs. I was able to do a bit of bending on the old dash piece to get it out without breaking anything else thankfully.

I was close! Lol. I didn’t think about the HUD being an issue. Good to know it appears to be a onetime use trim part.

I always have serious apprehension about those type of DIY projects. Looks great!

I was very cautious haha. I’ve also opened up quite a few dash panels in my day as I installed car stereos in high school for some side cash for my Monte Carlo. My dad was mechanically inclined and we worked on a ton of stuff together outside of that (‘67 Camaro RS, ‘66 GTO, ‘64 Chevelle to name a few). The only thing that intimidates me about cars today is all of the computer stuff and hundreds of sensors.

As soon as the Mrs and I get into our next home I’m buying a 70s, maybe early 80s, C10 step side to restore and make my daily. After a road trip to New Orleans in a couple of weeks, I’ll have put 5k on my Fifty in 4 months.

I usually get stuck on those hidden releases. Have only done a few stereo upgrades for my own vehicles. Usually look for detailed instructions but I still end up breaking a couple of those clips.

We had a 70-something GMC step-side for a while growing up. Its previous life was as a local “Power and Light” work truck. Like the look of those. Good luck in your search.
