I don't think that's the case. An oil pump should never break, regardless of oil. There should be a huge margin of strength built into the stock oil pump. Katech did it. It's not rocket science.

Katech changed to a forged steel, from a sintered steel. Big difference.

They didn't specifically tell me if/how it was damaged, but my idle pressures have returned to a steady 30 PSI now that it has been replaced, so I think it's safe to conclude that it was starting to fail.

Well it looks like I have same oil pump failure issue.
My canadian dealer said to try putting a oem ac delco oil filter.
since I put in a fram type last month and thought it odd ti happen at only 7500 miles ..12000 km.
Also have humming noise which may be faulty drive shaft bearing ?
Anyone have that issue too on 2018 zl1?

Hi RobZL1, I also have a 2017 ZL1. How many miles do you have on your car? Are you doing anything for the oil pump to keep it strong, such as oil changes? I’m keeping an eye on the oil pressure but switched to 0w/40 as well as warming up the engine before driving. I did some calculations on these numbers and it seems 17% of all 2017 ZL1s have had a failed pump, based on total production of 3048 ZL1s in 2017. There is a total of 51 2017s in this forum reporting a failure. Which means, the number is probably higher since not all 2017 owners are likely here. That is a significant number of failures.

I would take the car in for service and diagnose the problems. There is a TSB on the oil pump.

A little over 15k miles. I do nothing special- just change the oil when the computer tells me to change it. I use 5w30 Redline, personally. I don't warm up the engine before driving. I let it idle for about 60 seconds, then back it out of the driveway and go. I keep light throttle until the oil temp is 175+. Otherwise, I just keep an eye on the oil pressure at idle. If it ever drops below 30psi, then I'll park it and order a cam kit and oil pump.

Not sure how you can accurately extrapolate to get 17% failure of all 2017 ZL1's, but I know it's probably not a small number. If you look at the facebook group, you'd think it was every 2017 and 2018 ZL1.

Its certainly a very significant percentage. Just be thankful yours hasn't failed yet as long your dealer is willing to replace it when it does fail.

No dealer touches my car. If it fails, it will get a Katech along with a cam kit. If it doesn't fail, it will get replaced when I do the cam which is about 2 years out.

Technically, a heaver WT oil would put more strain on the pump.
