From this perspective, who cares whether or not the car is essentially the same as the 2016 model year?

"Citywide, the numbers are even more staggering: 90 Camaro thefts so far this year after only seven all of last year, a 1,285% increase."

The security update can be done, see below. Call Chevy GM Customer Service like I and others have done 1-800 222-1020. The OBD access with the device brought from Amazon as low as $415 is now on Tiktok. A cloned Key can be make in less than 5 minutes with it.

FWIW, I still park my 2011 5th Gen in the garage. I usually keep one vehicle outside in front of the house. That was usually my 2000 GMC pick up truck. Not any more. It has been broken into at least three times and nearly stolen a time or two. As bad as all these newer vehicles may be easy to steal, it's the older vehicles that still top the list. In fact, 20 year oldish Chevys and F150 pickups I believe have been stolen the most for several years. The old girl gets parked up the driveway and behind a gate now. When needed the 2017 Impala goes overnight in front of the house. (Never broken into, either).
I would suggest trying to mix up your parking patterns if possible. My guess is a targeted vehicle gets scoped out beforehand, and being creatures of habit we may unknowingly may make the thieves more relaxed and sure of their target..., or not. No matter how nice you may think your neighborhood is, if you leave a vehicle on the street, or easily accessible in your driveway, it more than likely will get the door handle jiggled, or broken into if they can see anything valuable inside....and more than likely this occurs (according to local pd) every single night. Just my $.02. Good luck. |

First time hearing about a "personal" boot so worse comes to worse it's a deterrant.

This will spread everywhere. All it takes to steal a GM car is ordering a $400 device from Amazon with no skill or knowledge required. |

The cops in yesterday's NBC News piece said that many of the stolen and recovered Camaros are being used in street racing.
My insurance is so high I've already considered increasing deductibles and reducing coverages.

I agree. Dealerships could use the VIN + other proof of ownership to request key encoding from GM without need to get that from the OBD, and would be a perfectly reasonable solution to a lost key fob. Obviously will take some time, but hey somebody lost the "keys to the car."
Why the need to need for the OEM design parameters to allow a key fob encoding to be read and (copy) written in 5 minutes using OBD access, if that option means significant risk of theft? |

the more high tech it is, the easier it is to steal it seems. GM needs to do better.

To be honest, I’m not sure the punks who steal modern cars with an OBD reader would even know how to steal an old school ignition switched pre-OBD car. You have to use real tools. No kid I’ve met under 30 today even knows how to use a screwdriver.
