I've watched/read compelling things about the end of the manual. Oh sure, emissions etc. but manufacturers of new cars would make more of anything if people wanted them.

A tragedy of the spiraling end of manuals is that the new cars and used cars are selling to a different audience. A lot of pseudo-nostalgic 'buy something that's cool/to try it out' go used a lot of the time to make their proclivities more affordable and realistic.

The person plodding down $ for brand new may also have justify its role to include a spouse who doesn't drive stick.

Also, there is a general chicken/egg spiral of high interest in people wanting to do manual; but they're apart from people with the knowledge and car to even teach them on.

WRT a new or newer model/expensive choice: Cars are a chronic waste of money, if you're buying a Camaro you're burning extra $ for fun. Get the one you want to drive, IMHO don't try to nuance some difference in resale.

With regard to the Camaro I think you are spot on for 99% of the buyers. The guys with the deep pockets ultimately decide what has value and what doesn’t. In the case of the Camaro they don’t move the market much because they are only one percent of the market. Porsche is a different market, manuals are done in short runs on very specific cars and net huge premiums. Different world , did you say you wanted the manual, that’s 100K mark up, of course I can ensure you actually get one, for a small 20K buyers placeholder.

I don’t get the spouse thing at all.

You love your wife?

She love you?

If yes to both she’ll want to learn stick and you’ll be happy to teach her. Then she’ll love driving stick and want to buy one herself.

If no to either one then you really need to reacess your marriage and question how much you honestly love each other.

It’s funny you mention that, I’ve heard that argument time and time again, “my wife can’t drive stick”. My wife refused to drive an automatic for years until we got her first SUV which was not available in a manual. That lasted two years and she went right back to a manual. Some twenty years later she has another auto SUV, I know she’d love a manual again. Although she isn’t a Camaro girl, she loves driving the ZLE and laughs when I tell her people complain about the ride.

I'm with olrocker, my wife can drive both stick and auto (of course), and she has no feelings at all against manual trans cars.

At the same time, she is reluctant to drive the Camaro because she knows how much it means to me and doesn't want to accidentally mess up driving an 850 crank hp sports car.

I appreciate her being considerate, and if she needs to drive it for whatever reason (it happens only occasionally, as we have more drivers than vehicles in the family), I helpfully put it in snow/ice mode and make sure she doesn't touch the drive mode button

Your car is a whole different beast, but again sounds like you married a good one! Yes Olrocker is on point. Marriage is understanding each others needs and being respectful of each other.

Tying love and driving stick together is a bit extreme. My wife and I will celebrate our 47th this December and she just isn't interested in driving stick. I taught her how on a 1981 Chevette (when we were young and poor) and she has no problems with doing it, just not interested.

She encouraged me to buy my car, loves how it looks, loves to ride in it and most of all, looks forward to my "blue car days" when I get out of her hair and go have fun.

Allan, ultimately I think the idea is that your wife would support your decision and vise versa.

I love being reminded of the Chevette. I heard a comedian say, hey I drive Vette……….a Chevette. I rolled the first time I heard that guy, so classic.

I had a really long commute at the time, needed something reliable/easy on gas and a new Chevette ($4100 with my discount) was the best option. As much of an econobox to drive as you would imagine for the times (and 74 rip snorting hp) with two exceptions, the clutch and shifter were both absolutely lovely.

We had a BMW 320i followed by a 318i in our comp fleet so my baseline wasn't too shabby. Maybe not too much of a surprise considering the Chevette was an Opel design originally.

Anyone know what I can get for my 2016 2SS stock with 70k miles? Quick cash offer though KBB was 20k, but seems a little low to me.

Love this car and don't want to sell it, but now considering it with my first kid on the way..

You should be teaching your kid to drive stick before he can walk
