Dealer just called. Said it will be $4400 to fix, which is better than I thought it'd be (I was expecting between $5k-$6k). Leaning towards fixing it and selling at the moment.

Good luck. I would suggest repairing the airbags...If you go roll-bar and no bags, that might not fly with insurance/liability and driving it on the street....

If selling, no air bags would probably be a deal killer....I'd just fix the bags, and know that any real rough tracking might deploy them....Odds are you'll continue years of street driving after the novelty of tracking wears off....Not great choices, but at least now you know...Good luck again with whatever you decide.

P.S. I guessed 4k....lol....

Hire a good lawyer! The sensor for the side airbag is inside the door.
No impact on the drivers door! Putting the passenger side wheels on the rumble strips should not activate the driver side curtain airbag. Safety issue.
File a formal complaint with NHTSA: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/
Get the FEDS involved! Airbags are a very sensitive area after the Takata mess.

Maybe if it occurred while driving on a regular road. Bags are designed to fire during rollover regardless of impact, so door damage is irrelevant. Your lawyer would be going after a "near rollover event" claiming that the bags in the car fired prematurely. A lawyer good enough to win that would cost you far more than the $4k in "damages" needed to repair the car, and one who would be willing to take the case for a 30% contingency wouldn't be good enough to beat GM's lawyer after they play that video in court.

PS - NHTSA doesn't regulate race tracks.

Just received this from Chevy. I think they're just trying to rub it in my face. Also, who was saying the ZL1 isn't advertised as a track car?

"A COMPETITIVE NATURE.
Designed to dominate on the track with 650 hp and 650 lb.-ft. of torque — plus a blazing-fast 0-60 acceleration time of 3.5 seconds1 — Camaro ZL1 delivers. It’s even earned a spot in NHRA star Tanner Gray’s garage as his daily driver."

I know, I know. I'm just bitter.

If this is the case GM should give us the option to turn off airbags for track/auto cross use. since they say the car is designed to be capable of such things. I track my ZLE and had my first off track Experience... All i could think about was Man i hope the bags don't go off...

There is not a chance in the world GM would expose themselves to that kind of potential liability.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure that's illegal on any street car.

This is what I was talking about when I said I hate airbags, a key to turn them off when doing track day events. I love how everyone is you hate them till they save your life. No, I would still hate them. I Drive a '69 Camaro that has no seat belts, driven it for 31 years, I've been in accidents in it before and I still wont install them in it. If I die or get seriously hurt its my own fault.
I also think once you own a car, you can do anything you want to it pretty much, (except the federal smog stuff). I think taking airbags out of a car is legal, you just have to disclose that if you sell. Old cars don't have airbags, and they sell aftermarket steering wheels w/o them also.

That is currently illegal, but under proposal (just not with a switch).

Doubt it happens, people (and lawyers) are always trying to watch out for other people.
