Vintage, I'm also in ATX. Can you PM me what dealer you use? I've only had my 50th for a month or so, but I've been on the hunt for a decent dealer, so if you're happy with them so far, I'd like to know. I'm also closely following this thread, now...

Doh that is a sad sight.

Ok, so dealer writes up they put in 10 quarts. Oil on the ground definitely looks brand new. PDR will prove you didn't money-shift.

It's starting to point to unfortunate parts failure. :(

Anyone living where the oil is ever below 40°C needs to pay attention to the actual oil specs.

The OP's engine failure was still during warm-up, so the very slight bump in high-temp viscosity of a dexos2 isn't in play here. Find another thing to complain about, the oil isn't the problem here unless there wasn't any due to dealer negligence.

Also, Mobil 1™ ESP Formula 5W-30 is Dexos2, though it's low-temp viscosity is still too high, it's more like a 10W-35.

There is no such API spec XW-35, also the LT1 in the Stingray asks for 15W50 for trackdays and there are plenty of people running that without issue. 5W,10W isn't a problem here. Not to mention it was the second heat and oil was warm already.

Even if it had 10 quarts of Dexos1 it wouldn't lead to an engine failure so quickly. Its 99.9% an engine defect caused failure.

Agree with what you're saying, but doesn't sound like a situation to me where the car is so strung out that a potential mistake by the dealer (which doesn't appear the case based on the thread) would have caused this. This thread was digressing into an oil argument, where to buy oil, what is dexos 2 oil and so forth. If this engine blows from dexos 1 vs dexos 2 or some other variation of oil within reasonable tolerances, then we have much bigger problems.

Let's say there was only 5qts in the engine from the dealer (I'm of the opinion it had the appropriate amount, but that's neither here nor there), wouldn't the oil light come on....like quickly? I'm talking well before he even got it to the track, like before he got very many miles from the dealer the day the oil was changed....
Yes and OP said he checked oil level. Oil level was not an issue based on the thread.

Correct and I understand that. Just wanted to clarify whether or not the light would have been on if that situation were to happen to me, or you, or someone else

A recommended oil went in the car, but I love the oil arguments. I am no mechanic so I go to the dealer and ask them to go by their manual. I am an owner and driver only.

The dealer called late today. No real update other than this statment "we pulled the numbers data today and we do not see anything, now we have to tear down the engine Friday or Monday, or both. Then we will have more information for you on the problem."

Unfortunately that wont occur until the cause of failure is determined, i.e who's going to pay for it. No dealer wants to order an expensive engine right away just to have it sit in their inventory if it comes down to an owner having to pay and then deciding they dont want to do it. The costs in shipping and returns fees would be a huge hit on the parts dept. Out of curiosity, anyone price out an engine for one of these? I can check tomorrow....

Good luck Vintage, hopefully they don't try the abused route on you. There are plenty of Z28 owners on C5 that have had that unexpected pleasure with GM...
