The primary issue is that there is absolutely NO REASON to be collecting this data without the owner opting in for it. 99% of owners will never use the Smart Driver function or care that it exists. They are being shoved into the data bucket, however, because GM wants it that way.
The simplest reason is it helps GM make better cars. And it’s more invisible to you than what Google does.

You have to have a moderate to high sense of conspiracy to think GM isn’t protective of you as a customer. The only real worry was years ago when someone demonstrated the ability to hack a car through OnStar which I believe has been resolved.

And one would have to be extremely gullible to believe that ANY company won't sell data if they are able - all revenue streams are good ones.

Do I believe GM is giving away my data to anyone on the street? No. Do I believe GM is actively selling data that is directly related to me and can be tied to me purely to make a buck? No.

Do I believe would absolutely bury a clause deep in a User Agreement that gives them permission to collect and sell data for specific things as a way for them to generate revenue in areas where this data would be needed (like selling my driving stats to an insurance carrier in order for them to offer me insurance)? Yes.

No, no and no. Have you actually READ the user agreement?

They will only use it in the ways you describe if YOU allow them to. That includes insurance companies, that is controlled by ME not On Star or GM.

Geez.....paranoid much? Might want to adjust your tinfoil hat a bit.....

Google and your cellphone are far more likely to misuse your data than GM and On Star

That data is the life blood of many companies, including Google. Google is very open that anything you do with your computer or phone is fair game for them.

Ever get an ad pop up for something you've never searched for but talked about within ear shot of your phone? Yep, I've seen that happen.

But the OnStar business model is not based on selling that data, it's based on the customer subscription. GM's use of the data has customer data stripped. So all I could get was the condition or state of a vehicle or model. Not your vehicle, just "a" vehicle out in the world. So even if GM sold that, which they don't, who cares? I frankly don't as I know far worse things happen with my phone......every second of every day by so many people it's scary.

I get the OnStar worries, but what I don't get why anyone gives a crap knowing pretty much everything they do with their computer or phone IS ACTUALLY tracked by someone.

Did you know Amazon has worked out shipping goods to the point that they can prep based on how long you hold your cursor over an item knowing how likely you are to buy it? That's why i'm not worried about OnStar.

Thats definitely interesting to see. Thanks for sharing. One reason I enjoy this forum is the lack of keyboard warriors such as on social media platforms. Conspiracy theorist? Good. Think they need to "adjust their tinfoil hat"? Good. Thats the beauty of America, we have freedom of speech (for sake of this post ill leave it at that). WE ALL LOVE OUR CARS. Giving up ones liberties based on $$$ quickly finds others determining what 'driving like an ass' is. No thanks, I want no part of it!

2 trips to the grocery store when you could have made 1? Doing so is dangerous. Sorry, we'll have to raise your rates.
I could go on and on about how dangerous of an idea allowing others to track you just to save money.

And if they succeed, then you can expect other insurers to start doing the same thing.

However, the hope would be that the state regulators won't allow this because of the data and privacy concerns. Maybe it will vary by state if it ever comes to pass.
This would technically constitute a GPS tracker in your car that is active the whole time and would violate constitutional rights. Choosing to put one in is okay, but being forced to do so would not.

Yes, OnStar technically is already like this, but you can choose to disable it/cancel it/etc. Yes, technically your phone also does this but you can choose to leave it at home if you so wanted or disable it.

Late to this thread and I'm not gunna read all 6 pages of reply's but if you want to beat the insurances get an insurance BROKER, unlike agents Brokers aren't beholden to any individual companies, they can check/quote all major insurances and TONS of lesser known ones that don't waste their members premiums on commercials or other promotional junk (I've had Progressive show up to dog promotional parties with balls and frisbees that you only expect dog type businesses to attend).

I just bought a new 3LT for about 38k, insurance to add it to my plan is $500 for 6 months, full coverage, under and uninsured, $100 deductible. And I know my insurance is good as I lost my last Camaro to being rear ended by a driver with no insurance and they took care of me.

Never ceases to amaze me the level of privacy people are willing to give up nowadays. I would never allow one of these sleazy insurance companies to snoop on me to save a few bucks. I also never activated Onstar and never will. Before anyone mentions a cell phone, yes I have one too. But unlike most, I would have ZERO problem living without one. Hell, I didn't even own a "smart" phone until a couple of years ago. I've been known to leave home without it (by accident or deliberately) and I'm still alive to tell about it. I enjoy a spirited drive every time I take the SS out (very few cops or people where I live). I'm sure as hell not going to make it easier for one of these companies to jack my rates.

Once I saw that driver map in the Chevy app with every spot on the map marked heavy acceleration, hard braking, I was like NOPE I'm out. Everything I can turn off, is off, unplugged, or opted out.
Of course the car is recording in it's black box and this iphone12, lord knows what it's keeping track of...

You're not late to this thread. It's a 2 year old thread that was reopened with a post that had nothing to do with the thread at all.

This is the post that reopened this thread after 2 years

and furthermore, if you go into edit options in your user CP and set # of posts per page to 40, it's only 2 pages instead of 6
