They replaced the oil pump again, then had to replace a sensor. They say it is making pressure and ready for pickup this morning some time.

Got the car back yesterday. OVERALL it is looking good, but I am now hearing a noise sounding like rattling(Hoping it is just a pulley making noise), and the dealership put a gouge in my driver side skirt from their hoist.. Will be going back Monday to address both issues.

I'm a mechanical engineer with nearly forty year's experience in aerospace. I have seen quality take the hit for countless design issues over the years. A good automotive analogy is the Vega, by nearly all accounts a total p.o.s. People squealed about the poor quality. While quality may have played a role, a Vega assembled from parts that were all dead nuts to their respective engineering nominal configuration i.e. 'perfect' quality, would still be a piece of crap. If quality were to blame for pump failures, gm would beat up on the supplier. Since they're continually rolling the part number, they are apparently tweaking the part design.

Add me to the list of failed oil pumps!
I'm trying to get the dealership to convince me that all of the broken fragmented metal pieces from the oil pump are accounted for. Ordered a new pump from Katech so it doesn’t fail while on the track. https://shop.katechengines.com/produ...sump-oil-pump/

The dealership told me that as soon as the pump fails there is no sucking or pushing and therefore no metal fragments should have left the pump... they also say there is a screen after the pump that prevents any significant sized metal pieces from making it by. They checked the oil pan for any signs of metal and found nothing.

Check engine light went off and it said "reduced power mode" then about 30 seconds later it said "low oil pressure shut off engine"
I did not check the oil pressure when the check engine light went off and it said "reduced power mode".

The oil goes from the pump through the crank, and straight into your main and rod bearings. I hate to say it but I don't see how fragments like this don't do some damage, and other mfrs would have recalled all ZL1s from the defective pump period (there aren't that many) and replaced the pumps.
They owe all "non-failed pump" affected owners a preventative pump replacement, and all owners who had a failure a 1) new motor or at least 2) full top-to-bottom engine inspection, oil system flush, new oil cooler, lines, etc. and bearings replacement including cam bearings and, new crank or cam if needed. Probably stuff I'm missing, I'm not an expert that's my .02 |
