The first cable I used for AA did not work and it was a cheaper 3rd party USB cable. I went and got my Samsung cable and AA came right up.

I get the feeling it's less the user's data cable and more perhaps the quality of the usb hub and extension connection to the head unit.

I'm using the official USB-C cable from Google. They created the spec for USB-C so I don't think that's the issue.

That did work indeed, thank you SuperSound .

I also found out that you can send a message via WhatsApp, even if it is not yet open on A.A. by voice command from the A.A. screen mic, not the steering wheel button, that one sends you to My Link system.

Np you can use the voice button on the wheel with AA too. Just long press. A short press sends it to myLink.

So is it worth going to the dealership to have Android Auto installed in on your opinion?

ABSOLUTELY! AA gives you some great capabilities. Personally, I like it better than Apple Carplay, but they are both pretty good. Another factor to consider is how fast your phone is now (before connecting to AA) . If it's laden down with apps and short on available internal memory, it will be laggy on AA or Apple.

Case in point... My android is an LG Tribute 5. Very simple, slow phone. Picked it up for almost nothing when my last phone LG G2 started feeling slow to me. Bad move. The new phone has significantly lower specs and internal memory. Makes for a spotty experience on AA, but i know exactly why, so I'm looking to upgrade again soon.

On the other hand, my work phone is an iPhone 6 plus. It's relatively new and i keep no unneeded apps on it, so it's clean and snappy. It connects to Apple Carplay consistently and stays connected. If it let me use Google Maps, I would just use that in my car.

Pandora and other apps work about the same in both AA and Apple, for what I tend to listen to.

One last thing... I've decided to give the 4G wifi Hotspot a try beyond the trial period. I have it set up through Onstar (not through a phone carrier) so it's a satellite-based signal and seems to keep me connected pretty much anywhere i go. With either phone connected to the car's hotspot, I get a strong signal all the time, even in the parking garage at work (and I park a couple of levels down below surface)!

Thanks for the info. I have the Note 7 which should work just fine. I just did not want to take the Camaro in to the dealership for the software update if it was not worth it. Any radio issues after the update?

FYI it's not satellite based. OnStar uses 4G LTE via AT&T. The antenna size is probably why you are holding a better signal.

My 2017 came with the update already installed, so no radio issues at all. I can't speak for those who have had it installed on a 2016 that did not have it pre-installed,

Any 2016 owners who added the AA update want to speak specifically to that? How's your radio working after the update?

Interesting...I had read that AT&T was the OnStar provider in other posts, so I asked that question, specifically, of OnStar...essentially, here's what I asked:

"Is the car's 4G WiFi hotspot provided via one of the phone carriers, like AT&T? I don't have (and don't want to set up) an account through AT&T or Sprint for this to work. I prefer to do it through OnStar only because I don't want to be subject to regional signal gaps and prefer the signal to be available in places where a phone signal might not be."

The rep I spoke to indicated that I had the option to go with AT&T, use my current phone carrier, OR use the OnStar satellite-based service, which she told me, costs a bit more, but provides better coverage.

You've got me wondering if I was misled. If it will ultimately be through AT&T, I don't see the point of keeping it, as I can just use my Sprint account and set up the car's hotspot through that (using the car's antenna, instead of the phone's). Guess I'll be pushing that blue button on my mirror and asking more questions...
