I think of it as the universe finding equilibrium. It usually takes some time to get things together enough to buy a nice faster car, so by the time you've done that, you've usually got too much to lose by being stupid.

When I was very young and very stupid, I had an 83 Z28 with a wheezy 305, which lacked the power to really get out of hand. When slightly older and a little less stupid, a procharged 94 Z28 that netted me a few certificates of stupidity, including one for smacking a 5.0 around. Now I'm older, and far less stupid. I'm still stupid sometimes, but I have a much better sense of when and where to do it.

There is a really long on-ramp near me, where you can see at least a half mile either way up and down the interstate from the bridge that turns on to it. My car just might put in some effort getting onto the interstate there.
