Ford tried pulling that same Cup 2 trick with the Focus RS. We now know their game.

-Installed TRACK-oriented brake pads
-Spec-ed springs, sway bars and MRC tuning for the TRACK (GT350 based)

-Tested, specifically, at many race TRACKS

Ford and any Mustang die-hard can say all day long this isn’t a track-oriented car: the design-intent of the equipment, nature of the validation and persons involved say a completly different story.

It’s a contradiction of itself.

Not that I don’t like the car, but this whole notion of it not being track oriented is so absurd.
The ONLY reason the PP2 exists is because the SS 1LE handed it its ASS. Without the SS 1LE, there would be no PP2.

They had to answer the beating it took. That is why it is not a true "track car" with track cooling. It was never meant to be, they did not expect to be severely embarrassed by the SS 1LE, so they forced to throw something together that would compete, if only for a lap or 2.

They have the GT350 as their track car, the SS 1LE just made them up their game on the regular GT.

Your assumption is incorrect. After the fiasco with the 2015-2016 promotion of the garbage Shelby GT350s that weren’t exactly the “most track-capable” Mustangs ever built, Ford is being extremely careful (and, in fact, pretty loud) about emphasizing that the PP2 is not designed for the track. The Cup 2s are an easy-to-get byproduct of Ford’s relationship with the tire manufacturer.

Do a head to head compare on the same tire, same day and same driver than get back to me, otherwise it's all BS

MT Best drivers car: both driven my Randy Pobst at Laguna Seca. Mustang just this year, SS 1 LE from 2016. Obviously not the same day, but same driver, same track.

Mustang PP2: 1:38.4
SS 1LE 1:37.7

Similar HP and less torque, but the Mustang’s more aggressive gearing helps that.

VIR is a course with very long straights, which suits the Mustang better.

There is 1-second there, and there is likely some driver related discrepancy, but I’d bet on the PP2 putting down a slightly faster time, same driver, than the 1LE.

What’s a better track car? The 1LE; even if both cars are modded.
VIR does have quite a few corners.

A SS 1LE, equipped with stickier Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, has a good chance of making up the time in the corners. I'd go as far as to say it would beat the GT PP2.

It's a moot point. The MT guys just trashed the Mustang and its overheating diff just adds insult to injury.

Everyone is focusing on R compound tires and the Mustang overheating while forgetting that the SS 1LE and the GT PP2 were not run on the SAME DAY on the same track. Environmental/track conditions matter quite a bit.

A good comparison is coming. The GT PP2 will close the enormous gap between the GT PP1 and the SS 1LE some. It will likely even win in straight line acceleration if they get one equipped with the A10 tranny. Its still not going to even get too close on handling though. Not even with its cheater R compound tires. Depending on the track used for the comparison it might even post a lap time barely faster than the SS 1LE if there is a bunch of really long straights for it to make up the time lost in the corners.

Poking fun at something... “inside joke”

The cars are close - Just Ford let’s their car sprint to the finishline limping.

The PP2 has allowed the Mustang guys to chase 1LE's around the street, that's it, on the track it will still be the 1LE winning.

This might also help the Mustangs leave C&C without crowd surfing.

I have a 1LE, but have always been a Mustang guy. I am shocked at how fast this Mustang went around VIR. It would probably be a great autocross car right out of the box where the issues with cooling are less of a concern. Nonetheless, the current Camaro is a better car than the current Mustang in all phases except getting stuff into the trunk and picking up shakes at McDonald's (damn I can barely stick my fat head out that window). Especially, if you want to drive one at track days.

The PP2 finished in dead last (12th) in this years best drivers car. In 2016 the SS 1LE finished in 4th behind the GT350R, 650s, and 911.
