Well, I constantly edge out my cousins A8 SS from a roll by a 1/2 car or even a bit more as the speeds increase.
I don't know who Mr. Jeff Lutz...but I must be a shifting pro then I'm not saying that I can shift faster than the auto but the manual is a little quicker than the auto in-gear from my experience. It may also have to with the auto being in a higher gear than the longer geared manual as the speeds increase. One things for sure is it isn't slower. Drag racing from a stop the auto is king no doubt.

because guys who drive manuals know how to use a stick.
I drove both. get the stick

Chevy is still bothering to offer SS automatics? Why would they want to suck all the fun out of the car?

I'm not going to go for all the "be a real man get a manual, blah blah" but I will say that I have driven both extensively and the A8 just doesn't have the "wow" factor that the manual does. The A8 is just a boring drive in comparison. Essentially the A8 "drives you" while in the manual YOU drive the car. You are just 100% in control of every aspect of how it drives, in the A8, not so much.

Now having said all that, another reason is if you are coming from a 5th Gen, the trans and overall driving experience is night and day. My last car was a manual 5th gen, and my new 6th Gen 2SS manual is just world's above it in responsiveness. The trans is smooth as butter and all the features such as rev match, no lift shift, launch control, etc make it the most fun I have EVER had driving a manual and I've had MANY. Yes, when it comes down to it, it is based on preference, but trust me when I say give the manual a try, drive it hard and it will put a smile on your face and will probably make the decision for you....go drive it!

No one in the history of the Camaro has ever, or will ever, regretted buying it with a manual transmission.

If you have to ask, buy the manual. Once you master it you’ll be so much happier. Seriously.

I've read on this forum in other posts where some have for one reason or another traded from an A8 to the M6 and praised how much they enjoy the manual and feel connected to the car, etc.

Honestly I don't think I've ever seen anyone that went from the manual to the Auto and claimed the same. Not to say that there probably isn't someone that did that but it's just not something you hear much about vs the other way around.

Auto is fast and I have beaten several should be faster cars because the other driver can’t shift. But the auto gets boring and quirky at times...

Because people overwhelmingly want automatics and cars that do more stuff so they can check their text messages and facebook while they drive.

If this isn't you, it's likely a majority of people you know. People are literally dying to have these features, dictated by their buying habits.

As you get to higher end cars, autos are faster and more efficient, two things that they were worse at for many years. With the tables turned, the case for manuals is simply that they are more fun and you have more control over what the transmission does, but as a business case, it's a pretty weak one. The number of cars where the auto doesn't make an improvement on the performance is shrinking every day.

The Camaro SS manual is probably one of the last great manual cars, at least in that the manual transmission was given at least as much thought as the automatic. Soon, any manuals are just going to be afterthoughts. In the latest generation, it really seems like they are starting to "groom" for automatic transmissions as the primary gear-switcher in the future...

Auto if you want the faster car, Manual if you personally enjoy having a manual. I've never owned a manual myself so I can't speak to whether it is more "fun" or not.

Get the manual.

I rented the auto 2ss for a full week while on a vacation, it was awesome for about three days, then it actually got boring-I couldn't believe it.

The first question you get asked will be "did you get the v8?" -yes
The next question will always be " you got it in stick right....?"

You get it for yourself, but when you get tired of explaining the perceived fail on that second question, you wont be happy with yourself.

The manual is actually more fun-and interesting to talk about.....because grandmas and grandpas are now driving 500hp 7 series automatic bmw's.
