Trade it.
No, I didn't...

If there is no immediate problem up front, and there may not be...it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to dump the car and take a loss. If there IS a problem, there is a good chance the dealership will be held accountable...lawyer or not (a threat of litigation is usually enough if you've got paperwork to fling in their faces).

Therefore...it is just my opinion...that there's a chance nothing is wrong with it after this, and keeping won't be a problem...versus a guaranteed loss of $$ by trading immediately out of fear, alone.

I had the same thought with my car after a deer hit me..."I should trade it...frame's f'd up...it'll never be the same, etc...". I decided to wait it out and see, like I suggested above. Turns out my car's fine, 3 years later. Had several issues with the dealer's body shop repair, and they fixed it each time I brought it in, including the time I had to put some pressure on them a year afterwards...but I had all the paperwork saved, including notes and emails to the general manager of the dealership where it was repaired.

Well luckily I have GM's 6 year/100k mile bumper to bumper extended warranty, so anything that goes wrong in the next 97,500 miles I should be covered.

If they took it apart and cleaned it, why would they need to sea-foam it?....Tell them you'd rather have them install a catch-can....lol...

Glad it worked out....Good luck.

Said he's also going to treat the system with sea foam to burn out any excess oil.
I think your engine sucked up the foamy oil through the PCV and screwed up the A/F mixture so much it either knocked, misfired, or some combination of similar events. This threw your car into limp mode. The A8 probably can't go above 3rd gear in limp mode, and you interpreted the sudden downshift as slipping. It all probably happened pretty fast
The PCV tube lets crankcase gases re-enter at the intake manifold. Since that is past the MAF and the throttle body, I think those parts are unaffected. Sounds like they are cleaning the intake manifold and PCV vent as well as the valve (they should probably just replace the valve), and maybe giving you new plugs. Depends how the plugs look when they pull them to foam the combustion chambers. Unless the plugs are an oily disaster they will probably assume the injectors are fine, reassemble, and test drive the car.
Your car basically choked on oil and stopped. A good thing because it prevented more extensive damage like fouling the O2 sensors and cat. I think the less they take apart the better.
You should ask what they plan to do about the oil. Just drain it to proper level, or redo the whole oil change?

You're covered and because the engine didn't go too long while overfilled, it may be fine.

Well I got the car back last night. All seems well again. Ended up replacing all 6 spark plugs, replaced the resonator, the air filter, and a gasket (believe it's the air intake gasket). He also cleaned out air intake manifold, air intake box, and PCV, and then treated the system with a sea foam-like cleaner.

Now that this is all said and done, are there any future signs or potential issues I should be keen to? The engine only has 2500 miles and my warranty is good for 100k miles, so I expect to have this car for a while.

And... what did they do about the oil which was probably still overfilled when you took it in?

In the short term, watch for anything that might indicate your injectors are fouled. Any CEL that pops up with a lean code or misfire would make me suspicious. If nothing pops up in the next 2 weeks, I would think you are clear.

I think it's nice that they replaced your resonator. Had I made this mistake on my own car, I would have just let that oil burn off. I guess we live in greener times and that is frowned upon.

They replaced the oil completely. Said he left the same filter in which I guess makes sense since the issue was too much oil and only had about 5 miles on it.

That sounds reasonable to me.
And I know you pulled that dipstick and checked their work this time

Sounds like all is fine now. Personally I would just continue to drive it & monitor. Wouldn't even consider trading it or taking a loss by dumping for something like this. But that is just me...

Good luck OP.

Yeah, I agree. Glad they didn't pull the heads or anything crazy. Then I'd be a bit worried, mainly about their work.

first, i wouldn't have taken it back to them. Would have gone to a different dealer and had the other one foot the bill. Might have been more of a headache, but wtf, they can't even do simple math. This isn't like you pulled away and had this happen, you had the info in front of the service manager and he argued that he was right and you were wrong ... F that place, seriously.

Either way, I hope they ran like 2 cans of seafoam at least through that thing if they didn't bother taking anything apart to clean. Talk about valve caked, spark plugs fouled, cats fouled, O2 sensors etc. It may not be bad now, but burning oil like that just threw off your scheduled maintenance, for sure (if it got sucked into the intake).
