Don't be tentative, make the car do what you want. Don't freak if you stall. Don't try to drive it like your motorcycle, the clutch action and everything are very different. You mentioned only one pair of footwear works, can you explain in more detail? Do your feet slip off the pedals, do your legs feel uncoordinated, does your body position feel uncomfortable, are you a really large shoe size?

Do you rest your left foot on the Dead pedal or hover over the clutch?

Where does your right hand rest? On the shifter, steering wheel, somewhere else?

I haven't stalled it since the first week or two of getting it.

It varies. Most of the time I shift to keep RPM's around 2k.

Shoe size 12. If I wear shoes with notchy soles the clutch pedal gets stuck and jumps up when I am engaging it. When starting out, I keep my heel on the floor and pivot using my ankle. After that I use my whole leg.

I rest my foot on the dead pedal except for when I am coming to a stop and about to press the clutch.

I say take your hit and trade it for a SS with Auto and you will be happy.

Sometimes folks just can't get comfortable with something yet the continue to drive it and be unhappy. Life is way to short for that.

One time I purchased a BMW with a Auto, everybody told me about how great the new Auto (SMG) trans would be in this car. I hated it. At this point I owned it about five months. Traded it for a manual, took a $15k hit on it, but never looked back and never bought another car that did not have a manual in it. (Just my preference).

Again, in my mind, I would rather be happy than unhappy, so if you really are not comfortable driving a stick, trade it for a SS with auto. Plenty of guys on here that love their A8 trans.

on the off shifts its a blast, back roads in north jersey are fun also, where you located?
maybe we can swap secret road loops. I have a 30 mile road course in the country that's great, no other cars on them.

So try the 1 - 3 shift as crazydmc suggested, and maybe also try staying in first longer, maybe up close to 4k before shifting - even when accelerating slowly. I'm assuming you've played with the different drive modes since they change the throttle sensitivity?

I did the same thing. After years of manuals, I bought a new BMW with a super sophisticated, fast shifting 8 speed automatic. I loved it....for about 5 months. Then, I hated it. I was bored to tears. The novelty of the paddles wore off. I was using the console mounted shifter like a manual, but with no clutch pedal it was completely unsatisfying. I got out of the lease early and got back into a 6MT. HAPPINESS.

If the auto makes you happy, you MUST get the auto.

I think it's simple.

You don't buy a Camaro for its practically, comfort, features, gas mileage, or how safe it is, nop, you buy it to put a smile on your face every time you drive it.

If a manual transmission is not doing that for you, then by all means go auto.

You will find a lot of posers that think that a manual is the end all be all and will give you crap for driving an automatic. They are not paying for your car, so just ignore that nonsense.

I am the opposite, I love the auto transmission on my Civic, but I went M6 on my Camaro, because I actually enjoy it.

It's all about the experience, so I would switch if I was in your position.

Also, the A8 is actually a good transmission, is not like you have I settle for some crappy 5 speed auto, that thing launches your car like a rocket.

I agree. I commute from Toms River to Princeton M-F and from Toms River to West Long Branch on Saturdays.

63falcondude, I can relate to a point and let me give you a quick back story on myself. I started driving stick when I was 15/16 and been doing it since. (33 years old now and a big rig driver), it took me sometime to get used to it, was doing the bunny hop, over revving, stalling, etc. for a long time as well, but gradually became second nature. But what helped most was being a kid, I had a farm and back roads to drive on, we used to drive the crap out of that old Datsun. We got used to shifting by sound, and forgot about missing shifts and stalling. What I'm saying, but not saying at the same time is, maybe you need to do a spirited drive and go through a couple of gears quickly a few times to get rid of that stress. Just be safe if you happen to. From what you've said, it seems like its the only thing you may have not done.


When I first got my '16 SS M6 I did not have the NPP just the stock exhaust, it wasn't loud enough for me to tell where the shift point was, so I went out and got a deeper exhaust because it was really bugging me that I had to watch the rpms when shifting.
Seeing you have NPP are you driving with the exhaust in stealth mode?

One last thing, the dead zone in the throttle, I noticed it too and I despise it. I'm getting a throttle controller for it, as it is supposed to eliminate that lag/dead zone. That could be a consideration to look into?
