Well, the first time a New York State trooper pulled me over it was to give me a piece of paper. The second time was to warn me to go slower through town at 1 in the morning. But I swear on everything Chevrolet...that second time was an honest mistake. I must not have seen one of the dozen signs that changed the speed limit through that small town. Was going 40 through was apparently was a 30.

Totally agree with everything you said and I should have something done this coming weekend.
Go for it! I forgot to talk about launch control and rev matching. Both very cool, and I was glad to have them! I'll answer questions if someone asks, but you can talk about that! Can't wait to read what you have to say. What a remarkable successor to the Camaro nameplate!

Question

Hi Mr. Wyndham,
I always have been a great admirer of the ZL1 and know I'm comparing it with the new 6th. gen Camaro SS. Now that I'm making my next move to get an automatic one to share it with wife, I see that for almost the same amount of $, I can get a low mileage '14 ZL1 or a new 6th. gen SS. Which one would give me the best performance for my $. I like to have spirited driving and some times going to my local PCA track. Please advise.

Honestly, I'd tell you to go with the new car because you'll get a full warranty and the latest goodies. The ZL1 may squeeze out the new car in terms of times around a track thanks to brute force - but the new car will be so much better to live with on a daily basis in terms of comfort, conveniences, fuel economy, maintenance costs, etc. The automatic 2016 SS is actually quicker than the manual by quite a bit AND features a higher fuel economy, so you're winning there, too.

The SS model on the new car features the full suite of racing coolers, except for the differential when equipped with an automatic, but that's not absolutely necessary if you're not tracking the car every weekend.

The differential on the ZL1 is tuned more for power and straight line performance than "whiplash" handling around a track, like the Z/28...so you'll noticed a dramatic difference in that the 2016 is far more nimble and lightweight feeling than the ZL1. It truly is dramatic, so that's worth considering.

If you get the optional Magnetic ride, all you're really missing is a supercharger.

I love the ZL1; I truly do. I used to drive a 2012, and I miss it occasionally. But this new car features 9/10s the performance punch, and so much more in other aspects. That's my .02, I'll be eager to hear which direction you take! Good Luck!
