What was the point of doing any performance testing on these cars? Why even bother waking Randy up for this. They should've just bused some elementary school kids out to Willow Springs parked the two cars next to a fire truck and asked them which one of the three they thought was the coolest.
They had decided they liked Fords snowfake-R before they filmed any of this. They commented that snowflake-R's paint was so bad they thought it had been in an accident. But all that orange peel just makes it that much more raw and unrefined than the camaro. Point snowflake-R!

Or they could just have Randy run the cars around the track and whichever was fastest is the best car.

That would save people a lot of time... can't decide between two cars? Look up their lap times and buy the one that is fastest because that would be the car you would like best.

Agreed, but they call that lightning lap. These guys just need to rename this "Completely Subjective Head 2 Head." The R by their own admission is, not as fast, not put together as well, not as comfotable, way overpriced (dealer markup), the engine is slow to rev and vibrates badly, was painted poorly and something you couldn't live with day to day. These are their comments not mine.
For the Camaro they didn't like, the color, the sound (too quiet), too comfortable (even riding shotgun next to and in the back seat with Randy going around the track... seriously), felt heavier, too predictable and not as easy to see out of. For some reason what would be digs on the R became complements and what you would think were complements for the Camaro became digs.
It seems these guys think what Chevy did wrong was make it right. Confused

Sorry to add fuel to the fire... but it's kind of true, the gt350 feels more special and it's a subjective feeling than the zl1. I completely expected to be blown away by the zl1 and at the end of the day, it's an excellent sports car and very competent and fast but driving the gt350 is simply more entertaining than the zl1 even though the latter looks more menacing and sinister (esp in black)... the zl1 could be twice as fast and I would still keep the GT350 and give up the ZL1. Surprised to say this and unexpected the exact opposite so I thought I would get rid of the GT350 after the ZL1 Arrived. After driving the ZL1 I concluded the opposite... which is a bit of disappointment in the ZL1 experience compared to he GT350. Never been a ford guy and always loved GM products.... and this is regardless of lap times. There is a tactile and musical interaction with the GT350 compared to robocop zl1

And catdog I can get behind what you're saying, especially when talking about the standard gt350 at msrp. Its exclusive enough to ask that price and useable. But the R and what it will "really" cost you to get one just isn't worth it a lot like the Z28 in my opinion. I'm also i guy who doesn't pay for brand new cars. One to two years old with super low miles, let some everyone else pay all the markup and deprecation and get what puts a smile on your face. After all your the one driving it to work everyday. I just genuinely can't see these guys driving an R to work everyday and enjoying it. The R is a trackday car and it lost at doing what it was meant to do and it cost you more money doing it.

My 2 cents:
SS 1le: race effort NA V8 455hp
gt350R: race effort NA V8 526hp
Equal times.

Zl1: jack of all trades supercharged v8 650 hp. Faster than both.
Zl1 1le: jack of all trades plus race bred. Gonna be even faster.

As far as feels go:
Saw a white gt350, not r. Wasn't impressed. Would prefer a gt. Haven't heard or driven one though. Haven't seen a gt350r in person. Looks nice though.

Zl1: mine in particular color, obviously biased, I'm in love. Looks, pretty, tough, menacing, fast. The noises it makes, unbeatable. Hitting 6600 rpm in a sc v8 is priceless. Hearing fuel and ignition cut as it cracks shifts off in race mode, priceless. Torque, off the charts. Downshifts, insane. Handling: better than any bmw I have owned(I have owned 3 e46 m3's) comfort: can't beat it. The looks from anyone and everyone on the road are priceless. It's quite honestly a pretty cool car.

These are the ONLY opinions that matter. Someone who's had personal experience with both cars. Everything else is just noise.
I bought my 350 based on unbiased opinions from owners coming from all sorts of brands.
I am trading my 350 next week however......for an R......at MSRP

It's plain and simple, they have sold their soul to the corporate agenda. It's not about a true unbiased review, it's about selling product, period. Motor Trend lost my respect after that video. If you look at the previous review of the ZL-1, they contradict themselves, sad, total marketing BS. The more you think about it the more the statement rings true "Fake Media"

I used to really care about MT opinion. Motortrend was my favorite paper magazine. Now I think I will just like Zero to 60 Times.

Or Randy could have parked both of them. Got out and ran around both of them and say, "yep, the GT350R wins."

After seeing the likes of the 13-14 GT500, the Hellcat, and the Z06 with the ZL1 rumored at that time to receive the LT4 engine, and considering the price point of those cars, yes I do think the GT350 is pathetic. From 15-17 (2 years), the ZL1 returned with more hp, tq, and outperformed the previous generation ZL1, Z28, AND the GT500 in every category all while coming in at a lower price than the Z28. In 2 years from 14-16, the GT350 came out at the same price point and although it outcorners the same older cars, it is slower than the GT500 and just as fast as the 5th Gen ZL1 and Z28 in the quarter mile. And the ZL1 comes standard with all creature comforts and even some additional features with it while the GT350R does not. So if Chevy could make such drastic improvements to the ZL1 in just 2 years while pricing the ZL1 similarly or less (than the Z28), how come Ford couldn't make something comparably impressive in that same time? Oh because they were too busy trying to make a special car.
+1

The ZL1 is special, because it can put up a time like that. Have all of the creature comforts. It does not have to be stripped down. You can actually enjoy it as a luxury car and it has a lot less scratchy plastic anymore. You can have all of the new tech parts, PDR, backup camera, big screen, killer Bose system, Nav, and like Randy, "steer with 2 fingers" and hang with "the track car"! I am damn proud of the ZL1!

You are braver then me. I have only driven new cars since 1980. I don't want someone else's hidden problems or body work, and leave me stranded. The only way I would buy used, if I knew the person who bought it new and I know everything about the car as if it were mine.
