Really appreciate your post, glad you can still enjoy a gen6 camaro! Are you planning on tracking the 2.0T?
Also, really like the respectful tone of this forum, in the early days of the bmw 1 series, bimmerpost was annoying packed with 128i vs 135i or 328i vs 335i. It was mostly the turbo guys insulting the NA folks. The same thing (v6 vs v8) really doesn't happen to much here, and if it does, it's a good discussion! |

Going from a loaded sports car down to a base model? Nah, can't do it. Add in the fact that I'm someone who thoroughly enjoys winding up a V8 sports car, I just would never go that route. And last but not least, I don't even want a 4 cylinder anything with a turbo.... sorry...not interested..
I respect their choice, and I applaud them for realizing that they needed to do this.

I know many people laugh at a Camaro with a '4-banger' engine, but I tell them to try it before you judge it.
We have Camaro's for all people, from the full tilt ZL1-1LE to the SS's, the 2.0T's, etc. I don't have a 6th gen, but just for comparison's sake, I have a 5th gen ZL1 M6 for a summer driver and a 2015 Malibu 2.0T for a DD. The Malibu weigh's in at just over 3,600 lbs which is close to the weight of a LT Camaro. BTW, the Malibu is a 6 speed auto. Is the performance of the 2.0T the same as the ZL1? Heck no. But then again the ZL1 (it's a convertible) weighs in at more than 4200 lbs. However, that 2.0T in the 3600lb car is downright peppy and it's fun to drive. I can just imagine how much fun a 2.0T 1LE could be. With a M6 trans and lowered just a bit, it would be a blast. And I still have the ZL1 convertible for those warm summer days when you just need the power. |

And if you have half a clue, this entire thread is nothing but opinion responses. Quote:

the weight distribution in many ways can be more significant in daily driving situations than having untapped power on hand that you may never get the chance to utilize.
My main gripe with turbo 4 bangers is more about how they're marketed as being fuel efficient when anyone who has one will be able to attest is misleading at best. That goes out the window whenever you're making boost ...and with heavy cars, that's pretty much anytime you accelerate. Even though the camaro is "light", it's no miata. But hey, at least you'll have aftermarket options so you wont miss out on as much fun as you'd think leaving the V8. |

OP congrats for your upgrade, IMO the 2.0 is a fun car to drive, drove my 2.0T on Saturday from home to LV and back, and still have 1/2 a tank of gas, and that was at 80MPH, enjoy your new ride.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Here are some answers to your questions:
- did I consider other small sports cars? No, actually I did not. Aside from my issues with the SS 1LE, I love the 6th gen platform, and the styling. I feel that even a base 6th gen has a superior chassis to the competition. Also, I know that I'm comfortable in 6th gen seats and I can drive it for hours without getting fatigued. Also, I already know the car, the parts, the community, and the dealers around me. Staying in the family is important in some ways. - how much money did I lose? I knew I would take a hit trading in a car that was only 1 year old. It was worth it, though, to get the car that I felt more comfortable in. The fact that the 2019 was so cheap partially made up for it. - did I consider a 2.0T or V6 1LE? Yes, but, ultimately I did not really want or need the added weight or expense of the 1LE package. If I do decide to track the car, I will likely get the 4-piston brembo package, put castrol SRF in it, and call it good. I don't know that I would need the auxiliary cooling equipment, since I only track 1-2x per year and I don't really go 10/10, more just to have fun whizzing around the track. I've actually been meaning to do a little research on here to see if there's anyone tracking a 2.0T without the auxiliary cooling stuff. If I DO really want to track the car, and heat is an issue, I could locate the OEM equipment and get it installed (I think). - fuel efficiency: it is very good with the 2.0T. I drove 75 miles home from the dealer and averaged 36mpg going 70mph. And I didn't have to baby it to do that. Just driving normally, some passing, even a few accelerations. I was impressed. - long term reliability of the turbo: remains to be seen, but I have no specific reason to worry. Many old turbo engines had issues, but these new engines are pretty stout as long as you stay in the recommended boost range. I have no plans to upgrade the turbo or tune. The power is already more than good enough for me. -weight: as someone said, the difference is only a few hundred pounds and its "not like its a miata, br-z, etc". BUT, i can tell you this--from the drivers seat, the difference is drastic. The car/chassis REALLY responds differently with a couple hundred pounds out of the nose. I wouldn't have guessed it would make that big a difference, but now that I see it for myself, it makes sense. And I guess here is where the subjectivity comes in--knowing what I know now, if I wanted more power on this platform, I wouldn't put a big heavy V8 in it. I'd actually want to see a slightly larger displacement 4-cyl turbo like the 2.7 that is still lightweight, with torque in the 350-375 range. I think when that Silverado 4cyl (L3B) engine came out, everyone immediately went "HEY can we put THAT in the camaro?" and I see why. I'd be interested to see how much the L3B weighs compared to the currently available engines. Last edited by protovack; 03-04-2019 at 04:22 PM. |
