TiKore makes Ti lugs nuts for Camaros in the US (Florida I think) and they are closed end. Also $599-649 a set I believe. They used rolled vs. cut threads on their bolts but unsure if you can roll threads inside a nut or not. Rolled threads are known to resist galling much better than cut.
In generally galling is more likely when you have two very similar metals, not when you have two different ones (differing metals cause galvanic corrosion which is a different process with similar practical results, seizing, etc.). You generally want to avoid having a softer nut than a bolt/stud too (Ti is softer than steel). One issue with the obvious solution, anti-seize compound, is that it will greatly modify the torque reading you get and almost certainly lead to over tightening which will weaken or even break the stud itself. Personally for nothing more than looks and a slight weight loss I wouldn't bother with them, and if I did I would be sure I bought from a known US manufacturer like TiKore (I have zero affiliation with them and have never purchased one of their products). All that said I probably will get some McGards in black when I get my car as I don't love chrome either. EDIT - with regard to galvanic corrosion, this is, in theory, highly possible with a Titanium/Steel interface, except it will not be the Ti corroding, it will be the steel. Ti is much more noble than steel on the galvanic series and the steel then becomes the "sacrificial anode". I wouldn't be surprised given enough time to see a steel stud corrode badly or even corrode away completely with a Ti nut on it. Again, this is just the science, I have no idea if this occurs practically in the real world. |

Don't mind the back/forth about titanium lugs, but can we get back to the origin of the post. Thanks.
Thanks for the info on McGards, will take a look at them. |
