What if I was to buy a new lock cylinder, and cut blade to its code? Would then the method from owners manual still work?

I lost my fob and keys for my GMC and the dealer took the vin ordered new fob and keys from GM they came in about 2 or 3 days . the key was cut laser cut and they programmed the fob . it was over 100 bucks .
