Went by the local shop today, looked at the Bell Sport and another brand they have called Zamp. Got to check out some sizes, but they had limited stock on hand and said every helmet they can get from Zamp, Bell and Simpson are on national back order right now.

I believe it. The 2015 rated model took months of waiting before I got mine. I ordered in May 2016 and didn't get it until November

i'm in the business of fixing broken faces so I've seen some nasty trauma even though i'm still very early in my career... makes me biased towards full-face protection but of course the way we enjoy our cars on track is actually very safe so luckily most of us with full-face helmets will just be less comfortable physically to feel safer.

some guys say you should never go on a track without full cage, hans, fire suppression, etc. the pros/cons to a full face vs open are at face value (pun intended). decide what you're okay with but 100% wear some kind of eye protection if you don't have a visor. I've had plenty debris come in the window and hit my shield ... not enough to tear my cheek open but maybe cause some eye damage or distract you enough to wreck....

then you just have to pick one that looks cool and fits your budget!

Just to through out another option that is well made, Sparco's Air pro I think you can find around $650. The carbon Sky lists for $950, I'd imagine you can find it for less. The both meet FIA 8859-2015 and Snell SA2015 ratings.

Unfortunately no such thing as "complete" safety exists. A couple of yrs ago a Cup car crashed with fatal consequences due to neck injury, notwithstanding full cage, HANS etc.
Some time ago SCCA outlawed closed face helmets for cars with airbags. Apparently they ended up reversing the call based on newer FIA tests, which approved both type of helmets for cars with airbags. There are vids of these tests. At 30mph. They clearly show the neck compression forces to be much higher for closed face helmets. Also, a vast majority of drivers leave the shield up, effectively negating eye protection. Heck, there are vids of pros at Lemans doing it. Also, when a deer goes thru a windshield, air bags should deploy. It is clear that C5 Vette had its bags taken out.
Not suggesting one over the other, as both are certified for autosports use. But both may present their own challenges in street cars vs pure race cars. Lastly, not that we should take any backward steps, but just a short time ago ALL pros used open face helmets in F1, NASCAR, etc. Bottom line, read up on the subject, make your own decision: it is YOUR head.

There are so many pros and cons to different safety gear. I for one struggle with the idea of sweating so much it affects my version and focus. I always wear a jacket, gloves, helmet, and boots on two wheels, but when it's over 85 degrees...... The sweating and just general overheating of the body makes me shed some gear. While accidents do happen, you being at your best probably is your best safety "gear". In no way am I say do not use safety gear, just what works best for you, like others have mentioned.

Well said Redlinez. Choosing a helmet because a deer can hit a car on a track would be last on my list as probability wise that's likely to happen when we don't wear any (OTW to/from track, etc).
Vision is crucial. Lightest weight is crucial. Understanding what may happen with weight on one's head without HANS is crucial. Understanding what may happen when airbags releases harmful gases that might get captured in a closed face helmet is another (this did happen). I'd say it is unwise to suggest one is superior from the other as it all depends on circumstances. And nobody can predict them. So I'd say: each of us should do their due r+d and then decide what's best for us individually. For example, of one finds their vision is affected, or one's head over heats, IMO there is NO good reason to pick such a helmet according to very basic safety principles of avoidance vs any other considerations. But, that's just my opinion that I apply to myself and nobody else. As it should be done IMO.

I snagged one of these Snell SA2015 Approved Open Face. Used it for a NASA HPDE event and it was fine. They also have very similar Full Face options if you perfer to go that way...

I like Bell personally.
Why do you state closed face is not good for air bag?

Sorry read this after the post... "Understanding what may happen when airbags releases harmful gases that might get captured in a closed face helmet is another (this did happen)"
