Really interested to see the results on the Mishimoto and CAI. It's a shame the Roto Fab doesn't have a red intake tube available.

Dynos don't tell the complete story, the track is where you measure it. Its good to have data, but that's just what it is, data. Its a tuning device, but if it never hits the drag strip you won't really know how it performs in the real world. Now data logging at the track will provide more info then on the dyno where you can make changes after each run.

97ChameleonTA,

I believe your car is entering catalyst overtemp protection on the dyno. Catalyst overtemp protection, or COT is a system that adds fuel to cool the catalytic converters when the calculated catalyst temperature is above a safe range. Keep in mind this system works off of a calculated temperature rather than an actual temperature reading.

In most cases, a car sees it's longest and heaviest acceleration on a chassis dyno. With the stock intake nearing catalyst protection on the dyno, our system can cause a slight miscalculation of temperature which can enable COT protection on the dyno. Again, this is a calculated value, not an actual temperature measurement. Also, it's important to keep in mind this isn't a condition seen during normal street driving or even aggressive acceleration. COT can become active during prolonged acceleration with our intake and the stock system.

We have done testing to prove that our CAI does not actually cause an increase in catalyst temps. With the understanding that it is a miscalculation of temperature, rather than actual overheating, a knowledgeable forum member will be dyno testing our intake with COT protection essentially disabled. This will give us information true to the on-road performance of our CAI. As of now, it's our belief we didn't go into full COT with the dyno test done by JDP. Contributing factors for this could be variables such as the length of pull, dyno load and using a M6 car. If you aren't familiar, that test showed a 12 HP gain across most of the RPM range.

I'm really struggling with how the intake could be causing COT to kick in prematurely. Both Sledge and I did our street runs in 3rd gear which is about the same loading on the engine as a 5th gear run on the Dynojet. Neither of us show COT kicking in until at the top of the RPM range which is normal an expected. Why it behaves differently on the dyno just doesn't make sense. The MAF output is virtually identical to stock.

I'm hoping Sledge can get back on the dyno now that he has HP Tuners and can log the data to really see what is happening.

Unfortunately no. I was in a rush and left my HPT laptop at home.

I took a look at some of my previous dyno logs and a 5th gear Dynojet run takes about the same time (~ 7 seconds) as a 3rd gear street run on the A8. So the engine loading is very similar.

I'll see if I can get on the dyno this week and see how it behaves. On the street it is perfect.

Just a couple of minor items to check... are your clamps tightened properly? How is your filter orientation? I'm running the dry filter and have the flat edge of the small end of the filter parallel with the flat surface of the box right below it.

Clamps are all tight, checked them after the first run thinking that may have been the problem. I have the oiled filter and I believe it's mounted as you describe. I can check when I get home. Do you really think there is a benefit to the orientation?

Working on getting to the dyno to do testing with the HP Tuner in hand. So much going on this week with work, its going to be tough. By i am trying.

It will be great to see some more 3rd party data on this system!

Dyno runs tomorrow early morning. Get ready for some logs. Just confirmed tonight.
