Did they make the automatic emerg. braking mandatory? I thought it was a voluntary compliance thing they announced a few months back..

I think it'll be mandatory in a couple of years.

Maybe "mandatory" is too strong a word. It wasn't technically a mandate, but in March 2016 they clarified a lot of the timelines and the scope of the commitment from earlier talks in September 2015. It's more or less a given at this point that every car sold in the U.S. will have this feature by 2022, including the Camaro.

NHTS press release: http://www.nhtsa.gov/About+NHTSA/Pre...n-aeb-03172016

This includes a commitment from brands that have a lot of performance cars in their lineup: Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Maserati, Mercedes, and Porsche. The remaining 1% that didn't commit are probably low volume nameplates. Maybe Ferraris and Lamborghinis, although Lamborghini is owned by Audi.

If Auto braking is mandatory I'll just quit buying new cars. It's bad enough now.

I'm curious how they're going to figure out how to do the automatic braking with manual transmissions...that seems like a sure fire way to ensure stalls for everyone.

One thing this should put to rest is that all of these cars fare MUCH better than their 1960s- pre-airbag 1990s pre-cursors. I still hear people say "old cars are much better in an accident because they weigh more, have more steel, less plastic, and are bigger", yada yada yada.....

In all 3 of the 2016 models, while the driver will probably sustain some injuries, they will survive.

With the old cars there is a good chance you could die, or at minimum be in critical condition for a while.

That disperses the forces of the impact away from the passenger compartment.

If you examine the components very closely, I bet you find specific points engineered into the components and connections to break and separate upon impact.

Camaro did a very good job here.
this, many vehicles are manufactured to crush, accordian, engine drops out the bottom etc all to absorb the impact of the crash to save the occupants. The only vehicle in these videos that kept the wheel on was the challenger and it rolled backwards and inwards pinning the driver in the vehicle. So, yeah, glad the wheel broke away.

The Camaro had the least amount of glass flying around in the side impact portion. Thank goodness for all that "poor visibility"...lol...

Yes, exactly.

I'd like to see a 1967 Camaro head to head offset with a 2017 Camaro. Don't ruin a collectible though..... use some base straight 6 with a 2 speed powerglide and drum brakes and a base turbo 4 1LT automatic with no options lol
