Tuning the transmission doesn't add any power per say...it simply allows all of it to make it to the tires all the time. This equates to faster acceleration. This is part of the reason why all those online power vs weight = 1/4 time calculators don't compute for the newer cars. You need more power then what those calculators show to run the predicted times. They don't factor all of the Torque Reduction and Torque Management that is in play on these higher powered factory cars.
The A10 shifts 5 times before the 1/4 mi and it pulls the timing back to -10 degrees on each shift. The first 2 shifts on a A10 takes like .5 tenths to complete. 4th on is about .25 tenths. The difference between a properly tuned A8/A10 is that a stock one will shift and not gain any ground on the shift, where a tuned one will usually pull soon as it shifts. 2-3 tenths reduction is pretty common and that is still leaving some TR in play. Remove all TR and you will see another tenth drop.

On street tires pulling some timing probably isn't a bad thing since it will keep the tires from breaking loose on shifts. On drag radials, probably a different story. |

So juice correct me if i'm wrong but after speaking with Chuck at HHP he said it was $800.00 for them to send me a TCM, plus $500.00 for the tune, and that I would ALSO need to purchase HP Tuners in order to add the tune to the TCM that they sent to me...does that sound about right? Seems like a lot of money just for a transmission tune especially if i need to purchase HP Tuners myself just to load their tune.

I get it man, i was just assuming it would be a tune they could throw on the TCM and send.....I would assume all ZL1s came with the same A10 transmission tune and they could cover all of them, but apparently you need to drive with it first?

The prices are fair, your paying for a new tcm, a tune and to unlock the tcm. TCM tunes are unique just like tuning the ecu. Its based on your power etc.

Long story short it's a very expensive process that isn't just a mail order tune....it's more involved and more expensive than that.

Is HHP currently the only vendor offering this?

Either way, Welcome to the world of modding newer cars. I waited until I knew we had full access of all controllers before buying my 6th gen. 2016 only requires 3 credits to license all controllers.

I'm sure I'll buy one and just as sure that I don't know how to tune my A10. Would you repost those images of your TCM tune to give us some ideas about the required tuning?

Had a guy with a 5.3 turbo truck that wanted to cheap out on having his tranny built, but wanted me to dial back the TD. I told him that wasn’t a good idea as it’s probably the only thing holding his tranny together. He didn’t believe so I said fine, I’ll give you one pass at 0%. It wouldn’t even make the shift to 2nd. He looks at me & says OK, turn in back to where it was. Wasn’t sure if the new stuff was more active through the gears. |
