No question the power output is impressive for a NA engine on pump gas. But let's be real here. The market for this engine is going to be something like 0.25% of the 1% of cars built for the drag strip. Did it really warrant a pre-release video clip and this much hype?

I told everyone that sounded like a big block. When you own a 1971 chevelle with a 454 in it. You know the sound

100% agree with Hawk. GM is just burning Marketing matches at this point. Use your "big release" on something with more substance. |

No wjy didn't they do this back when the Helephant was rumored? Gas prices are rising, people are selling these cars left and right, and they release a $20K crate engine. Who the hell do they think is gonna buy this?

You’d be amazed at what it takes to birth something like this through the bureaucracy of a big car company. Things were improving by the time I left, but it was still a matter of getting what amounts to a high dollar aftermarket part through a system that is fine-tuned to moving vehicle programs through to approval. And before that, getting the engineering resources to even work on it. I can’t help but wonder how many times this program was cancelled before it finally made it through.

Classic muscle car restorers People with a lot of disposable income Pretty much the same as any other high performance, high cost crate engine. Fwiw, gas prices don't mean anything to the target buyers for this engine. |

With some of the comments in this thread, I feel some of you would be better suited for a Honda Accord forum than this one. Good lord. Y'all are lost.

this is just a "look what we can do before the robots take over the world" announcement. there is no "target buyer" or ROI on this. they aren't going to build 1,000 of them for inventory. let's not get too caught up in the economics of this.

Was gonna post another more detailed comment along these lines, but ditched it... 1000 hp naturally aspirated GM engine and nearly all we see is whine, pun not intended. Somehow the "who on earth will buy this" question never arises when Dodge is commended on adding more horsepower each year, and yeah, this is "only" a crate engine, yet still remarkable. Not a new ZL1 for sure, but still an outstanding achievement.

General Motors has so much potential (Marketing, Engineering, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, etc). I just hate seeing them utilizing resources for a crate motor that only applies to the tippy-top, sharpest point of our arrow. I would love to see something that is targeted towards the "masses of car enthusiasts" and GM fanboys like myself. I don't think I'm alone with this comment. |
