So it's now Feb and no update for Waze. Starting to become vaporware.

So I'm hearing it was Q1 for Waze not end of January as that article mentioned. Apparently Google made an update to Android Auto recently to "prevent Waze from being the default for Maps" which is a good sign that integration is moving forward.

It's definitely coming. Question is when. 3rd quarter ends last of March.

Forgive my ignorance, but why does everyone love Waze so much? Is it just like Google Maps?

Well for me i like the fact that you csn alert other drivers (and they can alert you) of pretty much any road hazard, traffic, accidents and police. My Waze alerts me 1/2 mile out. There are many other features these are just the most common i use.

For me, the thing about Waze is the crowd sourced police location/reports. People mark when they see police speed traps or just cops anywhere on the road. Then Waze asks people passing that mark to confirm or deny the report. Algorithms determine when to remove the report (so a single user can't delete it).

I regularly drive from Boston to New York City and back. At least once a month. When using Waze and combined with my Escort 9500 radar detector, I can literally go 100, 110, or even 120 mph through some of those long empty stretches in Connecticut on 84 without a care in the world. Waze is good enough itself for the police thing but when combined with a decent radar detector, it's almost a 100% guaranteed not get a ticket.

I agree with this 100% as I use both with positive results.

The Waze user reporting system allows for flags to pop on the map faster than Google's standard ERS datamining. Now if Google's predictive traffic logic was applied to Waze incident flagging, I could only imagine how much better traffic could be with people preemptively avoiding incident areas before they back up. This would lead to less backup for all drivers.

The latest Android Auto update and removed the need for phone lockout when using it and will even let you run it in a standalone configuration with a trigger off of your cars bluetooth (for audio) to auto-launch the interface on the phone.

But this change has triggered daily hotfix releases which are getting annoying.

I use both regularly (running at the same time, so I can compare routing options). I understand that Google Maps uses traffic sensors to alert for heavy traffic conditions and Waze uses crowd-sourced traffic conditions to alert. In my opinion, the Waze routing is more reliably the "faster" way to get to my destination, but it sometimes takes you through neighborhoods and on back roads, etc. that I wouldn't normally drive on and that Google Maps would not include in its routing.

On the other hand, Google Maps has lane indicators, which can be really helpful in heavy traffic. My ideal setup would be to have Waze projected to my 8" screen and run Google Maps on my other phone, mounted in the car for easy visual reference.

My two cents...
