Domestic: a car built within the NAFTA region by an American company
Import: a car built overseas by an overseas company
Captive Import: a car built overseas by an American company
Transplant: a car built within the NAFTA region by an overseas company

NAFTA:

"Goods that are made in Canada or Mexico may be eligible for duty-free treatment or reduced duty rates under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The importer must provide proof of origin to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in the form of a Certificate of Origin and/or country of origin marking on the goods. The manufacturer or seller of the goods should be able to provide the importer with a certificate of origin. Be aware that all goods made in Canada and Mexico are not duty- free. You can contact an Import Specialist at the port through which your goods are being imported, to find out whether the goods you intend to import are eligible for duty-free treatment. For more information and guidelines, please see the publication NAFTA."

It's still an IMPORT, but it is subject to special duties due to NAFTA.

Use the US Customs and Border Protection as a source, not forum members.

Also, in direct contradiction to the line immediately above, when I ship things to/from Mexico for work, we fill out export/import papers. Mexico is part of NAFTA.

Yes, under strict legal interpretation anything produced in another country then sold in yours is an import. But the word import has a different meaning in casual conversation when talking specifically about cars. As such, a car that gets trucked over the border at Buffalo is technically imported, but it is not considered to be an import automobile under the common usage of the term.

And this goes both ways too. I have not met anyone who has referred to a Chevy or Ford built in the US as an 'import' -and that includes everyone I know who has personally imported used American cars themselves, paying all requisite taxes & duties associated with doing that.

People also use "literally" in the figurative sense. It's still incorrect.

So I guess the 1993-2002 Camaro was also an import? Go ahead and put the Cadillac XTS, Buick Regal, Impala, Silverado, Sierra, and Equinox on the import list as well. (There's a lot more)

Wow. How is it every thread I create goes extremely off base? This thread was already reduced a good 20 something comments due to everyone going political. Now it's gone off to if Chevrolet's are imports. haha.

I don't consider Chevy an import and i never will. GM is in america, it's an american product regardless of where it's produced. Apple is in California, their products are made in China. My phone and laptop are not chinese!
