Ruby down! Ruby Down! This year the fest was NOT fun for me. Mike won 1st place for 4th gen in the car show but I was miserable in the heat dealing with my ailing Camaro. Ruby started running rough from the time I started her to go to Bowling Green & was idling REALLY rough, but no check engine or other dummy lights. The next morning when I started driving to Beech Bend Raceway, it was still running rough but I almost immediately got the check engine light. I was having to keep it at 1000 rpm at stops. Once we got there I had a friend check it with a code reader & it was throwing 7 codes, misfires, lean codes & some others. Consensus among mechanically inclined friends was to try changing plugs. RacerGirl's Dad helped us change the plugs. One on driver side was not too bad & other two were really burned looking. On passenger side, 2 plugs came out completely drippy wet with oil & the other just blackened on the end. With the new plugs it seemed to run a bit better but check engine light came back on. RacerGirl's dad said he could hear air escaping from the manifold area & come to find out the 4 bolts on top of the plenium/manifold are stripped out. Not the bolts themselves, but the bolts had the threads from inside the holes in the manifold on them when they were removed. We managed to get a couple of the bolts to grab a little & got it driven home. Mike worked on it some today and now it is throwing black smoke out the exhaust & does not want to idle at all. We are looking at getting some longer bolts to grab down deeper (I have a manifold insulator & stock bolts) or taking the Black Iceolator off, getting a new gasket & see if the stock bolts will grab. Even with all that I will still need to figure out the issue with oil on the plugs. Now to find a mechanic I trust & decide if I need to have her towed. Once I get it sorted out I may just sell her. Feels like a sign. Any ideas, thoughts or helpful hints welcome.

Any update on the car ruby? I saw racergirls dad and hrpii help you out with what they could so you could get back home and wanted to see if your car is doing any better since fest.

I found a local mechanic I feel good about but he can't get to it until Aug 18th. That is fine as I got nowhere to go & 4 other vehicles to use. I just hope there is no damage to the engine. I am thinking about selling it once I get it running. Kind of ready for a SUV to drive into my golden years. Not sure yet. Hubby is also looking at retiring so a car payment at this point may not be a good thing. I guess I will decide once we see what he does, how budget looks, how much repairs to Ruby costs, etc.

Since I turned 60 last February, my family purchased me a drive and a ride around the Indianapolis Speedway in a real Indy Car thru the Indycar Experience. The drive was three laps in a twenty year old Indy car at 135 governed MPH. Which is the speed the pace car runs during a yellow flag. The ride-a-long in the two seater was at 190 MPH. That ride was worth the price of admission!! I will try to post some pictures.

I have been trying to get one at a track for a couple of years , they had a contest where you could enter and they would draw winner for each track , you just had to go there and you and someone such as mario andretti would take laps before the race . they also have some rides usually before racing starts or when it finishes . having had 2 pace car rides in toronto , 1 in a viper and 1 in a mustang gt , i know how i loved and and it gave you a better appreciation of what the drivers see or feel . who was driving the car ? . i am glad that you got to experience that .. |

I do not know who the three drivers were. I do not follow the Indy Car Series that close. The single seat drive was in a 20 year car. It was three laps at a governed foot to the floor at 135mph. That is the speed the pace car runs during a yellow flag. Going around a curve about 15 or 20mph over the speed limit would be a good way to describe it. The best was the two seat ride. We left the pit lane doing about 125mph onto the back stretch just past turn two. Got up to 190mph by the end of the back straight. He burped the throttle, turned left, and got back on the gas. It was definitely worth the price of admission. I recommend it at any track they go to. John
