Again, not GM related, but he was trying to work out a merger...

Quote:
Mere weeks after FCA announced it was shutting down production of the Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200, new hope emerges to give the sedans a stay of execution. Speaking at the Geneva Motor Show last week, Sergio Marchionne said that the company was looking for a partner "who is better at it than we are and who has got capacity available" in order to continue building the models on its behalf.
First he admits his designers/engineers have to copy Hyundai. Now he's basically saying his company isn't as good at building cars than others.

Ladies and gentlemen, the great Sergio Marchionne.

He says stuff like that and expects other companies to jump at the chance to merger.

Yep:

“The 200 failed because somebody thought that the rear-seat entry point inside the 200 — which is our fault, by the way — is not up to snuff,” Marchionne said.

The problem: The slope of the roof crimps the entry portal.

Then the boss explained what went wrong. “The Hyundai which we copied [presumably the Sonata] has the same problem,” Marchionne admitted. “We didn’t copy the car, we copied the entry point to the rear seat. Dummies. I acknowledge it. Some people from design left some of their private parts on the table after we came up with that determination. But I think we’re learning from this process.”
I mean, come on!!! But I 100% agree with the article that copying other manufactures is not uncommon.

It isn't, everyone does it. Just normally the CEOs don't publicly and nonchalantly admit that they did.

Usually they dont admit to copying but saying, "We used the ( insert car name here ) as the benchmark in design we wanted to compete against".

Or go on to blame the design that they copied for the faults of their car.

Its like cheating on a test, then blaming the person you copied from for getting the question wrong.

I've been running a Lease Here Pay Here car lot for 11 years. I have bought 892 cars to date. Hardly any FCA product. Why, go to an auction and check these cars out with 100K miles or so. Crank one and open the hood and you'll hear why. Pretty expensive to fix.

More evidence that Chrysler is about to die. Though manufacturers rebadging another manufacturer's vehicle is nothing new, like when GM used Izuzus for the Geo Storm and Tracker, I think Machionne's plea for help is a desperate signal. I assume if FCA stopped making those cars themselves, they would save money by laying off the workers in the factory that make the Dart/200, thus also saving money by not having to provide health benefits.

I will never buy a Chrysler product and the only vehicles they make that I would even consider owning are the Charger and the Challenger. However, I do not wish to see Chrysler die.

FCA is living off Ram and Jeep, one bump in fuel prices and they tank. Also they have the highest loan terms of any company, killing the vehicles equity so their customers can't upgrade.

What gets me is that they can make good cars, the Challenger and Charger are pretty reliable from what I understand, you don't really hear about 392s blowing up.

I doubt it.

GM has the 3.0L LGW TTV6 in CT6 right now.

With enough time, money, and effort just about any engine swap is possible. The biggest problem fitting a V6 into a Sonic would be the width (which, since its a transverse engine would be grill-to-firewall) as those cars have fairly stubby noses.

And keep in mind that the displacement of an engine doesn't have much to do with its exterior size. Any 2 engines within the same family are going to be nearly the exact same size on the outside.
