Obd2 port lock it’s not the key you need to worry about hiding it’s all done through your obd port and xtool advance in the thieves hands they stop onstar and start the car through the obd port and xtool key programmer no key even necessary and breaking corner of glass alarm doesn't sound hope the best

Probably preaching to the choir, but remember this thread when heading to the polls. Need politicians that are tougher on crime.....regardless of all the other political distractions. Car theft is a serious crime and those caught for it should not be walking free!

It's the court systems (district attorney) who make insane plea deals with criminals, leaving the victims to pay the costs for replacement along with the mental health impact.

Another easy step in reducing the ability to copy a key is to relocate the antenna that is inside the center console, next to the cup holder. Moving this antenna should prevent key duplication (or at least the would-be thieves wouldn't know where to put the key). The wiring for that antenna is long enough to present flexibility.

Does the common OBD method require a physical key fob? I thought it only required the plug-in OBD tool.

I would never have thought OBD-II port access would be allowed without a key fob. Is that the case? It must be, otherwise this duplication method wouldn't work, since the thieving ****s only have blanks...

Is there any good reason not to require a working key fob to operate the OBD-II port? The only snag I can think of is a situation when the security module doesn't work, but that could be solved with a secondary master module that requires physical access, for example.

Why couldn’t GM simply rout the OBD port where they have many cars n the past - below the center of the dashboard below the center HVAC outlets, maybe behind the knee pad?

Seems to me half the problem here is simply that you can just reach the port simply by reaching through the window.

How would someone legitimately get a new key/fob made, if they lost both of theirs? Repossession, rental car mess up, I can see several use cases that could come up frequently.

Totally agree. If they can't reach it from outside, they'd have to open the door which would set off the alarm. I think this is a great 1st step.

Reason to get a obd port lock cover.

Fair point. The master module I mentioned above would come into play in this case, but it's a hassle indeed.
