Porting can yield better throttle response, but the choke point is the butterfly / OE TB hole. Could someone explain how and why they would expect a RWHP gain from a ported TB as the size of the TB has not been changed?

Concur.

Changing topics,
Do you think it's wishful thinking that GM will come out with and aftermarket (drag) tune to go with their performance product line? The only way I would do a tune is if I can keep the warranty intact.

I think Tony Mamo uses a larger TB, the part numbers from the OEM to the one he ports is not the same.

That makes sense.

The only way to really gain power is to increase over all flow either oversizing the choke point or making it flow more by removing half the throttle shaft which does increase air flow as if was larger. The problem is at that point you will set a code for airflow correlations between the maf and tps and will go into reduced power. I have done this on my own so know what it takes to increase flow and piss off the stock tune. I don’t have a pic handy but will post later when get home. So now I can’t use it till I tune for it. What the porting is doing is removing a large lip so that at 25 percent open it is acting more like 40-45 percent open. Soon as you crack the blade on the stock one the air is forced to other side of body as ramps up when you port it then it pulls more even from top to bottom. A vacuum and some smoke sort of a wind tunnel affect you can see what it is doing stock vrs ported. So in the end gets you more response maybe a little power under the curve but wot it is flowing no more over all air it is less turbulent so might see some small gains but over all driveabilty is what your paying for with out having to tune.
I stand corrected.

OEM Part is 12678223

Tony shipped me 12620263 (ported of course).

12620263 supersedes the OEM. As I can't find the specs (bore diameter) for either part I'm going to assume they are effectively identical.

Agree (and understand) what porting does - makes airflow less turbulent, more efficient. The payoff (butt dyno) gives the impression that the car is quicker, which it may be from a throttle response standpoint but, agree that it would be marginal in the way of actual power increase.

Unless someone does a baseline dyno and then swaps in a TM TB for another dyno run I don't see how you could confirm either way - and even that would be suspect as what is actually being changed is, again, marginal and likely "within the noise" for statistical purposes.

No change in volume = no gain in HP

That is not to say a ported TB doesn't drive better. If one right, they absolutely drive better.

Are you saying porting doesn't improve volume?

Think of a funnel. No matter how big the top, fluid only flows so fast through a 1" hole in the bottom. The top could be two inches wide or 22 inches, the choke point remains the 1" hole.

I think you are missing the point. Porting removes a very slight amount of metal, increasing the size slightly, it also smooths out the flow path, this reduces the resistance to flow increasing volume.

I've never seen a flow bench go down a dragstrip. I KNOW for a fact that Tony Mamo is a very talented air flow expert. Lots of pro porters out there claiming lots of magic but they don't all net the same results. A bench is but a tool.

Who are you and what certifications do you hold to be questioning Tony Mamo? I've never once heard of you in 15+ years.
