I also agree that it's tough to get an accurate reading from the dipstick. I usually check it cold, after it has been sitting for at least a few days or more and as long as it shows somewhere within the hatching, it's good.

With a 10qt oil change and a stock AC Delco filter, the dipstick measurement seems to range from the midpoint of the hatching to the top. If it gets to the bottom of the hatching, I'll add 1/2 qt. I only have to add after multiple track days.

Just so you guys know. This isnt rocket surgery. Your engine can be a couple quarts overfilled and you would never know. There is a big area of give in the oil pan. A 2.4 equinox i will always overfill by a quart, just to help the customer make it through the oil change interval.

I've had cars come in with 6 to 10 quarts overfilled. Now that's a different story. They run but smoke really bad and on the high side you will see liquid oil coming out of the tailpipe.

I've had one that customer filled until she could see the oil under the cap. I had to rebuild that engine because it ended up with a bent rod.

My car is 11 quarts to the full line. In another thread i was wondering if some of the dipsticks might be made different and that's where the difference really is. Or even the dipstick tube or a combination of both. Or even the dipstick tube isn't seated completely.
If you had a slightly shorter dipstick and a slightly longer tube. It would make the level of the oil seem to take more.

I can't find a good explanation for this short of damaging the dipstick tube or overfilling. Even things like aeration should only show a temporary high level condition.
Also, if there was something about the design of the dipstick or weird behavior with more viscous oils, I think we would have seen similar reports, since this generation is now in its 10th year.
