Agree...The OLM in mine drops over 50% just from sitting stored over the winter. So, it's algorithm cannot be based solely on usage.

Agreed! I put mine away ON Halloween last year at 92% oil life and when I first started it back up May 24th this year my oil life monitor showed 56%.

I was referring to my truck, not my camaro. Something changed from how GM did their OCI countdown. It used to be strictly based on usage/conditions/mileage. My 2017 truck (Gen4 L96) OCI monitor still said 60% after 2.5 years.

The 2023 Camaro, as you pointed out, will factor in usage or linearly count down from 12 months from the last reset, whichever is faster. I can't prove it, but I think it started with Gen 5 DI engines. Right now it's showing like 18% remaining after about 10 months and less than 2000 miles.

For those of you that change the oil once a year and have to put your car away for the winter, You should change the oil before you put it away and not when you take it out. Used oil can have acids, carbon, and other impurities in it that you don't want in your engine for months. Just consider how dark, almost black it looks when you take it out. I did the same thing with my boat, which had an Olds 455. The boat people always recommended changing before winter.

GM recommends once per year regardless of mileage. But now you are on the other end of the discussion of do you change at the oil life monitor or some historic mileage. Oils change shops still say 3,000 miles while every German OEM is at least 10,000 miles. But based on the work 8 know GM has done (specifying their own oil standard DEXOS) I trust GM on this one. But here is the one thing I do know. If you change it sooner than GM recommends, nothing bad happens.

German cars do this crazy thing with their factory recommend high mile oil changes. They stop running due to sludge buildup. Its part of a return plan from the factory. Set the engine up for failure by slowly wearing it down, it makes it through the warranty period and starts needing more and more repairs toward the end of the loan. So people trade the car in and get a new one. How often do you see 15 to 20 year old Bmws or Mercedes on the road? You will damn sure see old chevy trucks that get 3000 miles oil changes.

The general consensus is that if the oil is less than a couple of years old, it hasn't had enough time to degrade. Environmental factors can come into play, (i.e consistent very high humidity, air moisture)
Though let's be honest. Cars with minimal annual mileage typically sit in garages.

Largely, modern oils, and especially the oil recommended for the Camaro models, don't deteriorate from sitting unless for an extreme period of time.
The oil life meter is based on time and usage. It will say the oil life is at 0%, even if only 2 miles have been driven in a year. In that scenario, the oil is still fine.

That said, oil/filter changes are the best ROI on engine maintenance, and the minimum needed for longevity.

For me, it's worth piece of mind to change it at a minimum of once a year, no matter how many miles driven.... not worth the possible consequences so I don't take a chance. It definitely does help to keep moisture and other contaminants out by getting the engine up to operating temperature....

This is what i am going with as well. I put on 500 miles or less between May and October each year. I'm ok with an annual oil/filter change.

for what it's worth, the OLM also likely takes into account how low you run your fuel tank as well to account for potential sediment ingestion. i can't recall the source i got this from but this image is a shot of the C6 LS3 OLM algorithm and as you can see at the bottom, the programming will factor in fuel quantity. i have to believe GM would continue to include this kind of granular analysis in more recent products.

fill your tank up anyway, getting stranded sucks!

Date of 2009 for those charts is interesting.
Follow link in the below post for someone's 2009 thesis on oil life monitoring, which includes many details of GM's algorithm.

fascinating stuff, thanks! i noticed the same figure i posted on page 14.

as always, the OLM is a great tool but should be used along with the owner's discretion as only they can truly ascertain their car's operating parameters and adjust the oil change interval appropriately.

I thought the 2009 date might be more than a coincidence!
Glad you also found it interesting. Best breakdown of OLM methods I have found, though I haven't read the whole thing in a few years.
I do have the pdf saved in multiple locations, ready for the apocalypse
