IMHO, any walk down the oil aisle shows "the oil industry" promoting LESS frequent changes. First it was 10,000 mile oil, now it's 15,000 miles. They also don't push the premium gas like they used to. The math on unnecessary purchase of high octane fuel used to add up to $1 billion annually in US alone. Probably hasn't come down much, but at least they don't push it like before. |

Back then mobile 1 and amsoil had the best testing statistics across the board. FWIW Shell gasoline also had the best additive packs for gasoline. My friends still in that field recommend filling with shell every 4 fill-ups at a minimum.

Engineering explained on youtube has a video how they torture test mobil 1 oils. They basically run them through an LS type v8 engine modified to include way more blow by contaminants than an actual engine, constantly for x number of hours and then test the oil. The idea is to simulate the worst possible scenario for fuel dilution and blow by. The problem is with some direct injection engines including my kia 2.4 is they produce heavy soot similar to a diesel engine. Soot is too small to be filtered out by the oil filter, and it has to be changed. Also city driving and hot and cold cycling can put more wear on the oil.
The GM Oil life monitor actually works pretty well and is much more than a dumb counter. I'd follow that.
