The real reason they are sending in the Marines, is they needed to air out the Navy ships. You Jarheads sure stink up our boats!

The Guard can only do it in US Territory or in a US conflict ..... Haiti does not belong to the US and there is no conflict .... Also it would be a lot faster to use the Marines from on ship rather than scattered over many cities and bases .. The Coast Guard is different as well, but can be used in non US Territory ..... I believe the Coast Guard is still under the Dept. of Transportation or Dept. of the Interior or something of that nature ...

The Marines may be what is needed. As sad as it is for me to predict this...I have a feeling that in the coming days things are going to continue to fall apart in Haiti. A huge disaster in an area with such unrest is going to get very ugly, very fast. Haiti was extremely dangerous before...The Marines will be needed to try to keep things under "control"

Yep its gonna get bad quick, earlier today some on location new org was saying they had to keep moving around, as if you stayed in one place to long they were getting mobbed for supplies they didn't have and said it was quiet scary as people are beyond desperate.

Though if ya know the history of the place, they are on the edge of desperate daily.

Its like the starving kids in Africa commercials, I feel bad but the only real answer is moving trucks, not a hand full of rice.

i feel bad for the people of hati but lets be honest all the money being thrown down there is going result in nothing spectacular

Sure you've seen them mob a food relief truck and just swarm the UN guy and take what they want. Food that could of fed 1000s now feeds a dozen or is sold as folks carry off whole giant bags.

They might still try that on Guardsmen, as they will out number them the same but might think twice before rushing Marines.

Its gonna be a mob soon as no one has food n shelter, the gangs will gather up to claim what ever they want, leaving even more without.
Thats part of it but guardsmen would go equipped like regular army so its a moot point.

Its probably has a lot more to do with a guy with stars on his shoulders asking "Who do we have ready to go RIGHT NOW?"

And Marines are typically closer to being ready to deploy at any given time than NG is...

And Haiti is going to get worse before it gets better. For all intents and purposes, the nation of Haiti no longer exists.

Thank you! Though I do believe China sent a 50 man rescue team to help.... yeah... 50 people.... in a city of 3 million. Better than nothing I guess, but still, I can bet they only did it to say they helped (and probably to search for their own people that were there).

Very true. I think they said 1/3 of the population was in their capital? This will take years and years to recover from.

They have the largest army in the free world. They've got the troops, airlift capacity, and supplies to spare.

Haiti is in a permanent state of disaster. The Marines may be the best equipped to help with the state of this poor nation. There is bound to be looting and violence.

I don't disagree with this. And I know the UN already had 7000 people there to help keep the peace (bad sign to start with, and the General of that force is Brazilian...eek). However it'd be nice if the UN ramped up, got in there, and did something right for once. This seems to me to be something the UN should be excellent at.

Yep. A lot of people don't think about it, but a nuclear powered aircraft carrier makes a helluva disaster relief platform. Its a mobile airfield, hospital and giant desalination plant (400,000 gallons a day capacity!) all rolled into one.
