I did it an about 780rwhp, but was a C6 ZR1. So I’d agree with “at least” 900 WHP, for our heavier cars.

Best Regards,
Dave

Opening up an old thread, but I’m back at the bucket list of 200mph.

The former 850rwhp ZL1 went with my son when he moved to Idaho last week but not before he was able to eke out 169.72mph at the gila bend 1/2 mile.

And since it’s my 69th bday in a few weeks I picked up a 69 Camaro with a 540 bbc in it and we’re in the process of freshening it up along with massaging the heads and a new cam to shoot for 725-750hp with the plans to add a 200 shot of nitrous….
And then I recently saw the new Harrop bbc sc that should push us to 900whp without any nitrous and be a whole lot safer in the 1/2 to 1 mile races, so I think we’re gonna go that direction and yes, this car will have a roll bar along with th400 and a gear vendors and gearing somewhere in the 3.55 neighborhood with 28” tires.

Well after some quick calculations it appears I’d neeed 3.23 gears to hit 200mph so maybe a quick change rear end?
Any suggestions, throw em at me.

2023 ZL1 - I hit 162 with my first series of bolt on's. That was headers, ultra high flow CATs, Corsa Xtreme axle back, 100mm TB, BigGulp, Elite EX-2 catch can running 93 octane!

OP, why insist on reaching 200 mph in a single mile? I mean, is it the speed that's on your bucket list or the acceleration and thus power required for doing it in the standing mile? A 900-1000 rhwp ICE typically isn't particularly suitable for the street, there are exceptions but if you, say, use normal tires that work with various weather and road conditions, you might as well not even have 1000 rwhp.

I would personally be okay with finding out the max speed of my car over 2-3 miles or more (hoping it's above 200 mph), although I will say it's difficult to find a runway or really any other opportunity to do so in my area.

Everyone here talking about how much hp to do 200 mph and nothing about tires. I sure would hate to lose a tire at anything over 80 mph. So what brand tires are 200 mph capable?

Would need to be a ZR rated tire (186+).

I'm thinking 1200hp for 200 in a mile.
The faster you go, the quicker the mile run passes.

I would think a stock auto car might get there in 4-5 miles depending on the road, DA.

It's quite a feat to hit 200mph in the Mile. Been there, done that. I presume it takes around 975rwhp with a two-ton car. I hadn't had my car dyno'd but with all my tuning and calculations, that's about where the numbers hit.

Did you say you wanted to run a 1969 Camaro for this event? I hope that thing will have every suspension mod and aero to keep it planted, and then some. And, brakes! When running those high speeds, the only way I can describe the adrenafeeling is like in the old high school days running one of those 60's or 70's Mustang/Camaro/Challenger car up to 100mph on the street, it felt like the car wanted to explode, the street was trying to throw the car in the ditch, and the empty beer bottles in the floorboard were just a bad idea from the beginning. My 5th Gen SS felt like it was one of those cars when nearing 200 - all over the end of the runway, the striped lines on the runway looked like a solid line. Up to about 180 if felt like it was on rails.

Transmission and rear gears are key also. I think 3rd gear the TH400 is only a 1:1, right? 3.23 with TH400 at 7,000rpm will net you 186mph. You’d have to spin the motor 7,650rpm to hit 200mph, or get higher gears, like 3.08 or 2.73 if running a 10-bolt. Then again, they’d have to be strong enough to support the 975rwhp. Whole equations for every part come into play with a Mile event.

It’s just one of those things… 200mph. How many people in their cars do you know that’s done that, in a street car. Mine was a daily that just happened to have over 1,000hp.

Newer, high speed tires are required. I think the Texas Mile techs them to be less than 4 years old. Not sure if they looked for a Z-rating, probably just condition and how fast you plan to run. I ran Michelin PS4 and Hoosiers. With the high HP cars, traction is non-existent for the first 1/4-mile of the run. Pretty sure the event rules have all that stuff, and they're registering for the October Fall Mile now.

Ok so this is not a great video, and it's a 5thgen not a 6thgen but it goes to show a few things:

This car is full weight street car, plus fire system and road race cage. Weighs in at 4,500 plus lbs with driver.

It is our popular Stage II head and Cam, SBE, pump gas Kit making 700rwhp +/-

This is at elevation and a hot summer day.

1/2 mile = 157.8

1 mile = 188

1.5 mile = 203.5

We made some upgrades and put in a 427 TT and at 950 rwhp on an test run did 199mph in the mile with two drivers @ 4,700lbs race weight. I do have an onboard video somewhere. Car has done just over 200mph at the 950rwhp again at elevation in the heat of summer on e85.

I thought I'd take it easy on my very first run and get used to the airstrip at 16psi - cracked an easy 194mph on the daily car. Bumping the boost up a bit to 19psi I slipped a little over my target of 200mph. I had 9 more psi of boost on tap. Car weight 4,450lbs. I estimated wheel HP to be 975-ish.

I have a customer with a full weight C7 ZR1 that ran 206mph in Texas last year. The car makes 930RWHP on our dyno.

A 6th gen would probably need 950RWHP-ish to run 200mph as it's heavier and less aerodynamic.

You may want to take a look at "Big Red". Many different configurations all designed to get the large '69 Camaro moving fast. Plenty of ideas for aero, suspension, power and safety. bigredcamaro.com.

Well, a NASCAR makes say 750hp and weighs 3400 w/driver and fuel, and we know they can hit ~220mph, so 750 should be good
