Unless you can crawl under the back of the car to the rear axel, and actually function under there, then yes, you'll need to jack up the car

You need to lift up your car, unless you are a super super tiny man

Don't get overly concerned - this happens often to many differentials. It just has to do with changes in temperature, the pressure inside the housing and how the vent tube/cap allows pressures to equalize or not fully equalize.

the differential itself is not pressurized as there is a vent on the top of the case. The tubes which enter the lower portion is for cooling the differential using transmission fluid...this circuit is pressurized but separate from the differential fluid.

this was from the differential case, where the differential fluid is. The differential cooler from the transmission is inside the case, but that doesn't open when you drain the differential fluid.

The changes in temperature of the fluid will create a pressure inside the differential housing.

Yes, the vent allows relief of that pressure, but can sometimes allow a small, residual vaccuum (negative pressure) to be rendered when the vehicle isn't in use. That is the hiss. It is normal. Happens with "jiggle-cap" vents. Manual transmissions will do it too.

Well I definitely feel better knowing everyone has the same experience. I just had a leak, so I was paranoid about everything.

The car needs to be level, regardless whether you can do it with or without jack stands. Good Luck!
