HaHa... Right...

I'm honestly surprised at all that, the Carvana type of selling model even works. I just couldn't look at a car online only and then purchase it and have it delivered. I can imagine that there are tons of listing mistakes like this on their site.

I find any company that sells cars out of a vending machine style delivery system to be sketchy at best

We had our local dealer switch to the Carmax, Caravana, type selling model. No prices are negotiable anymore. If you have a trade they come out and look at your vehicle and print you a check. Check is good for 7 days for either out right purchase or trade. You then pick the vehicle you want to buy. You have 7 days to return it if you don't like it. You can NOT get your vehicle back. As soon as you cash that check that vehicle is theirs. (VERY low trade/out right purchase value) I found it to be about $3500 under any other dealer trade value. If you bring the vehicle back you bought within 7 days, you pick a different one, or get the dollar value of of the check.

It seems to be doing them very well and this is the largest auto dealer in the entire area around here doing this.

You're expecting a company like Carvana to represent accurate info? They sell cars out of a vending machine.

Buy and sell your used cars on the private market. You get more money selling private and you can get a better price buying private. And you don’t have to pay insipid dealer fees.

Never trade a car in if you want what it’s actually worth.

You are absolutely correct. The flip side are the elements of time and convenience. When you’re at the dealer looking at the new shiny one, it’s hard to estimate how much you’re leaving on the table by just trading in and being done with it instead of listing and dealing with tire-kickers, low-ballers, and just basic pond scum before that right buyer comes along. Also, some people need the value of the old car now in order to get into the new car.

Meh, I trade all my cars. I will walk out of a dealer if they low ball me too much. I understand the ramifications of trading but I take;

my time X my "hourly" wage X PITA factor and make a decision that dealing with the public is not for me. That is what the dealer gets paid for and I am glad to pay for it.

In Florida if you trade in your car they deduct the trade in price for the tax you pay saving you a lot of money if you are trading a decent vehicle. That could make trading on par with private sale.

They do that in Ohio too. You still come out ahead via private sale because dealers charge that infamous “doc fee” which in Ohio is $250, and no matter how nice the car is they will only give you around $2000 less than what they know they can sell it for.

The tax difference might be $700 between the trade in and new car. You’re still behind $1300 vs selling it privately.
