I have had a few fun domestics (CTS-V, SRT-4, GT Mustang) over the years, but mainly I've stuck with Japanese in my early years and German in my later years. The ZL1 6mt I have now has opened my eyes to the unbelievable value (dollars wise) and performance. There's no question the 6th Gen is a faster car than the 5th gen, in almost every variation. That being said, I absolutely love the 5th Gen body style and more specifically, the Z/28! It's a dedicated sports/track car, beautiful, and streetable. I even considered (and secretly still do) trading my ZL1 for a Z/28. I'll tell you what stopped me. It's not because the ZL1 is noticeably quicker and more agile (without being rough). I didn't do it because you get used to the creature comforts in a modern car (like your M4). Silly as it sounds as I type this, the interior ergonomics of the 5th Gen, lack of HID headlights, and various other creature comforts is the reason I stuck to my ZL1 (at least for now). For me, I'd give up the power of my ZL1 if I came across something that inspired me as much as my car. The Z/28 is a special car, possibly more special than a 6th Gen ZL1. This is coming from a guy who works for Porsche...
For me, I always want to try different cars. It's not about upgrading to the next car or getting a "better" car. I just like different experiences in cars. If you're ready to give up the specialness of your Z/28 for a 6th Gen ZL1 or ZLE, I'd say do it. Just for the experience. It is very different than your car (aside from the shitty visibility=). For me, I would consider trading my car for yours. Same reason: just for a different experience. The big plus you'll have with the 6th Gen (aside from the obvious performance upgrade) is the modern options we've gotten so used to... There's NO wrong choice here! First world problems are supposed to be fun.

I had a 15' Z/28 that had a stg 5 kit from Vengeance Racing on it. With almost 700 hp it was fast and handled well. Never tracked it and won't track my ZL1 either. Why did I sell it? I wanted more creature comfort as well as better handling and ride. My ZL1 would smoke the Z/28 with it's 10 speed and handles even better. I really like all the features of the ZL1, especially the Hud. The 10sp w/ paddle shifters is a hoot to drive. In sport mode the engine is constantly in the power band always knowing what gear to be in. Can't say enough good about the tranny. The magnet ride is much better and changes with the mode you are in.
Many talk about collectability of the Z/28. Are you willing to wait that long? Cars are not good investments, if that's on your mind for owning it. Yes, they are more rare than the ZL1 but, so aren't the ZL1E. In the end, it's all about your expectations and wants. You need to at least drive one to know. Good luck on your decision.

![]() Rarity wise; you are comparing the ZLE, which has more built every year than the Z/28 ever had built...its not really a comparison. The one thing I wish I could port over from my ZL1 is the A10; otherwise, I can live without the amenities. Those I really need or want (a carpeted trunk, homelink, android auto, and performance measurements), I can add for fairly cheap to the Z/28. BUT, to be fair, I've had 2 6th gens, and didn't really fall in love with either one. One lasted 3 mos in the driveway ('16 2SS), and the other 6.5 mos ('17 ZL1). Both went away to get a Z/28 ('16 for a '15; and the '17 for a '14). The 6th gens just don't grow on me; they are actually the first camaro I haven't fallen in love with or liked all that much outside of the 2nd version of the 2nd generation (which I have also owned lol). The gen6 ZL1 will crush the Z28 in every way. If you really want a collector car just to bubble wrap and stare at in your garage I would suggest a 1969 Z28. It’ll cost you over 100k I imagine, but it’ll go up in value well. If you are wanting to drive a performance machine that’ll rip, then the Gen6 ZL1 is the way to go.

I like the Z28 but it was kind of a flop at it's price point... It's not any faster then a 6g SS(12.2 @ 117 stock). Let's not forget the LS7's valve guide issues. They are rare and to some that matters more then how good the car actually is. Would I own one... Yes. I almost bought one back when you could scoop them up in the low 40's with next to no mileage. Now they are back up into the mid 50's for the same mileage. Would I have one over a 6g ZL1...NO! Especially at the price point you can get a low mileage ZL1 for.

This is sound advice. We can sit here and debate endlessly about which is better (and this conversation has been had before) but OP should drive the ZL1 1LE. My bet is that once he's sat in it and driven it, he'll know what to do.

I went the other way, I own a ZLE and had a Z28 for a weekend to compare. They are two different cars, different enough that if I could own both I would. I will say, to me (a novice track enthusiast) the ZLE feels more balanced, planted and overall more solid. That's not to say the Z28 is not a beast in its own right, more raw and certainly still a blast to drive.
My ZLE is my first experience with owning am american sports car so take my opinion for just that. Tho the only 5th gen that ever even turned my head was the Z28, so i diffidently still like the car, but after seeing and driving the ZLE, I knew which I was going to choose.

I'd actually consider trading my ZL1 for the Z/28
