I’ve won big events in the car, and it’s bone stock. That said, the best results were in an extremely smooth track.

I’m not some noob and I am not hating on the car. I love the car.

But I’m 2800 miles in and 2 strut failures already. My friend who tracks his car extensively is on I think his 4th strut.

So even if they were fast I’d be looking for better alternatives.

However, this thing is radically stiffer than my race car, it has way too much compression stiffness, and cornering speeds are significantly better in non zl1 Camaros with much softer shocks in many corners - per data.

GM does a lot of things well. It does not always release perfect stuff.

Ps - I missed a constructive post - sorry for that.

Anyway any info on shock alternatives is welcome.

Don’t the mag ride shocks require wiring and a module? I don’t think that’s a viable option.

Still need camber too, so it may be aftermarket only options.

Yes too stiff for the track. By a lot. I have probably twice the spring rate on my race car and it has way less compression damping especially at high piston speeds.

I don’t drive it on the street at all and don’t care how it rides.

I do want it to be faster, safer and more reliable on track. Softer damping would accomplish all of those things.

It is so stiff it skitters over bumps and actually impairs vision in some places, such that cornering speeds suffer, and safety is also an issue as if you enter rough patches at the limit on the gas, the results get unpredictable and the frequency is so high that you are having to make major corrections to reel the car in, instead of just working the tires properly.

As far as ‘buying the wrong car’ comments, GM did not make available the fact that these struts are only good for 1000 miles, nor did they let me drift the car into a bumpy corner at 100mph at full throttle, so those comments are pretty dumb.

I am pretty sure you can have the OEM shocks modified to give you softer dampening. You can pretty much do that with every shock. I would try to contact the manufacturer.

Are you saying that Multimatic does not have the ability to set the damping of their dampers? It might not be a viable option, but I am fairly certain that it can be done.

Driving style plays a role on shock set up, that's why adjustable coilovers are typically the go to. Perhaps that's what you are needing?

I have not heard of any strut failures (aside from a leaking ZR2 multimatic strut), doesn't mean it's not happening, I just haven't heard of it.

True, i would probably keep similar spring rates. Are they published? But i like digressive shock valving gemerally, where the car soaks up high frequency bumps well and is compliant, but controls body roll at low piston speeds pretty well.

These are the opposite of that, and if your eyeballs are shaking so hard you cant see, you have too much high speed damping period.

There’s a place in upstate NY that’s currently working on zr2 and 1LE rebuild kits. Not sure if that’s just seals or tuning as well. I called and they were in early r&d, that was around March

What happened to the DSSVs that it was decided there was a failure?

The Gen5 Z/28 DSSVs and the ZL1 1LE DSSVs both have a sintered brass vent on their body. This is needed because they are an insert type of damper. The insert will displace air as they move. Inside the damper, there are bushings that the insert rides on, Multimatic uses a clear to amber grease at these bushings. This grease will sometimes find its way to the brass vent. Some have complained that this points to a failure. This is normal. You can remove the vent and clean it with Brakleen and reinstall. I run the Z/28 DSSVs on my Gen5 SS 1LE. I have had the fronts apart to see how they work, and looking at GM's published literature on the ZLE DSSvs, they are similar in design.
See red arrow pointing to brass vent, yellow for bushing

I have been getting the "Boing" (Front Pass Side) since I hit 850 on the odometer and now at 1K it seems to get worse, but as of this morning in the carport, I fired her up and no noise after going back and forth with the steering wheel, but when I take her out and drive around it will come back so who knows, well hopefully someone will.

Why not have them replaced under warranty until it is up?

If you don't want the DSSV shocks, MCS are a great alternative.
