You’re thinking of ExtremeContact DW... The ECS came out only a few months before the PS4S.

NO I was thinking of the right tire I need to look at that I thought the ECS was a year or two older than the PS4S.

edit: ya my bad they're roughly the same age

So, say you will be doing 1-3 AutoX events and maybe 1-2 HPDEs a year, but also 2-3 thousand miles worth of nice weather drives and grocery and gym runs on the street (no rain). Which is the tire to go with? At least one of the events requires >=200 treadwear too, so seems like the stock ZLE GY SC3Rs have to go no matter what.

I wouldn't mind a "better" ride and lower road noise on the street too, but those are lesser goals for me. Really these factors don't matter to me, but if all else is equal, lets go with the quieter/more compliant one.

Mitigating the shower of rocks and sand would be very much appreciated though on the street. Also I am in MN, so I drive in 30-40* weather in the Spring and Fall too.

Plan would be to keep the SC3Rs and get dedicated track wheels for them eventually, but lets not break the bank for something that gets used 1-2 times a year just yet.

Thoughts?

The only thing to this is are the universal $15 mud gaurds, any summer or A/S tire is going to throw down the length of the car. And, the usual suspects that charge much more for their gaurds (they do like nicer) are far less effective/lack enough coverage for a 285/305 width tire.

From having these cars for years I slap the universal set on the front as soon as I buy the car. It's effective over looks....a trade off there. Look nicer and get much less coverage...

Personally, Im hoping when I get up to tires with a 300 to 340 tread wear rating that I get less debris thrown under and down the sides of the car. I think between the Michelin and Conti performance wise the tires should be close. Ill buy the Contis since there generally a little cheaper and have the 340 rating. I drive in Pa. and the roads here are crap and always covered with gravel all summer. I do have the flaps installed on this car already but Ive found on my 2013 GT500 , that the guards only helped some. That car had a early generation Goodyear Cup Series Tire on it from new. When I traded it after only 7000 miles the rockers and quarters were loaded with chips. So, like the O.P. stated, Ill keep the OEM Goodyears and mount them to another set of rims for track time then go with the Contis / Michelins for the summer.

I put the ECSs on mine straight off the lot. I have no chips at all after 12,500 miles most of them highway. No track days and car is driven only while dry. They ride great, are pretty quiet and wear fantastic. I’m sure I’ll get a solid 30k out of them. The only way I would go to PS4S on the next set is if they have a good sale on them otherwise not sure they can be that much better.

BanOne, I personally don’t think you will be disappointed with the Continental Extreme Contact Sports summer tires on your ZLE. They have a good treadwear rating and handle excellent too. I had a set put on my 2016 2SS 6 months before I bought the ZL1 and I really was impressed with them and would have had some put on my ZL1 this month but the rears were backordered and the GY F1 Supercar 3 were available so I bought them.

Has anybody tracked (AutoX or open course) the Conti ECSes or Pilot Sport 4S? Obviously I know the GY SC 3s and other more track oriented tires like r888rs are going to be better, faster - but, as a novice/intermediate, can a guy at least make a few runs here and there on them and not be a complete embarrassment to the 1LE brand? And will they hold up ok if pushed harder for either AutoX or an open course a few times like I am looking at?

Really appreciate all the input!

If you’re going to Autox, you should run the Goodyear Supercar 3’s (non R), they are street class legal. And fastest tire on the camaro in our local region for a couple of guys. I had bought a brand new set from tirerack but sold my car before ever getting to do an autox.

Message me if you want a smoking deal on a new set.

Best Regards,
Dave

I haven't autocrossed either of those, but yes both of those are competent in any performance situation. You'll likely be a second or two off the pace of the "cheater tires," but a competently driven 300tw class tire will beat a poorly driven 200tw tire. I have personally gotten a couple top 20 out of 120 results from a 300tw class tire at local events.

When it comes to track, you're not competing against anyone so the difference in time is only a personal thing. They're street tires first, so if you start really testing where the limit is you may start to have have some overheating or chunking issues. The one issue I've had when tracking a PSS is they're not good at accelerating and turning at the same time, they can really only do one at a time. Of course that was on a car with 330 front wheel torque.

Coming off of GY SC3's (non-R) on track and auto-X, I was very impressed with the PS4S street manners, especially noise level, comfort, and grip available without a lot of heat in them. I figured I would give them a shot on the auto-x instead of switching back to the GY's. The first couple runs when they were cold were pretty good. As soon as any heat gets in them and you start pushing harder the grip falls off pretty quickly - enough for me to not want to even entertain them on the big track. Keep the PS4S for a great spirited driving street tire that can handle wet weather and keep the SC3's, SC3R's, or R888's for the track usage.

Spot on! PS4S awesome street tire. But (In my biased opinion) if you're going to actually drive it and track it or autox... you want the SC3's. (non R) The R's are best if you track only/trailer.

Best regards,
Dave

I really love my ps4s as a street tire (I'm in MN too) but if I was tracking it in any way I would definitely buy a dedicated track tire.
