Good stuff suggested, on brakes I will add that you should also check the brake pad's thickness when you are changing the brake fluid out. If the brake pads are at least half of new thickness they would typically be considered good to go.

On insurance, it all depends on your risk tolerance. For me, $350 vs. the risk of damage or even total loss of the car plus possible damages to the track? I'll take the insurance. Personally I think it is an easy and obvious decision.

Most of the major points have been hit, but I'll emphasize a couple:
Insist on an instructor in the car with you to start out, if possible. Some organizations will do "lead/follow", but don't settle for that. Go slow to go fast. A fast lap looks slow on video because it's smooth and boring. Don't be 'speed racer' out of the gate, build up slowly, learning the track and your car. You'll end up faster at the end of the day. Definitely get track insurance. Big wrecks happen to experienced drivers, but the majority of crashes I've seen in the last couple of years were in the beginner's group, and most of those were just going too fast, too soon. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate... Track driving is a lot of work mentally... if you start to loose focus, get off the track and take a break. Brain fade is more likely than brake fade to cause an incident. Finally... HPDE is NOT racing. Wait until it's safe to pass. Watch your mirrors and be courteous to faster drivers. Oh, and HAVE FUN!!

FWIW the insurance covers the entire weekend so it can make sense to do Sat and Sun to take advantage of that.

It's also why our primary track car is a Miata... no need for insurance and significantly less expensive consumables. |
