Possible water damage from the hurricanes and floods.

Got it. But that should be pretty easy to confirm though. Can a car sit under water and it even run right long enough to sell. Plus should inspection of electrical boxes and connections be an indication of flooding. Just curious. Of course if it was flooded that would make it a no buy for me. But when I buy service trucks for my guys the first thing I look at is rust. Once the rust sets in on them they are a horror to work on.

I bought a former rental minivan. a 2013 Dodge Caravan. Knock on wood, this has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Bought it with 40k miles and now has over 130k. Only thing replaced has been the tires. I think the big rental companies (Hertz, Avis, Enterprise) maintain their vehicles pretty well.

I would imagine the rental price on a Camaro SS convertible would be really high probably limiting the young clientele and hence the wear and tear. If the price is right, I'd say go for it. Keep in mind, the resale value will be lower as anyone you sell to will see the rental car use on the carfax just as you had. How much are they asking?

That's a tough one then. That's not a bad price depending on options. Is this from a dealer or the rental company itself? Also, 2016 or 2017? M6? 1SS or 2SS? Where in Wisconsin is this located? I might be able to take a look.

I was between buying a coupe or convertible SS last year during the first week of December with the 20% off tags. I think I was looking at a 1SS M6 convertible for around $34500 I believe. I ended up getting the coupe as I already own a convertible that I wanted to keep. I never got a chance to drive an SS convertible.

I would really scrutinize the car obviously. There are probably people on this forum that know what to look for better than me. But if you can get the car up on a lift, you can check for previous frame damage. My convertible is a Honda S2000. I would closely scrutinize the convertible top. Maybe put it up in increments and make sure the convertible top frame goes up smoothly and in alignment.

good luck

-John

I don’t trust rentals, especially a Camaro. No telling how many times the car was full throttled, or worse, full throttled in a cold engine.

Price seems high, especially this time of year up North.

$30k will buy a non-fleet 1SS vert with <9k mi. about 30mi from me.

Offer $25k and take it home for $27k tops.

I agree. I see Carmax Kenosha has 2 SS convertibles for around $29k. You should be able to beat Carmax by a couple grand.

I bought a rental car from Hertz fleet a few years ago (Chevy Traverse). They offered it for 3 days and if you didn't like it, you returned it and paid a rental fee (so that people didn't sign up for 3 days test drives just to take a free trip). When you buy it, you sign the paperwork and don't pay the rental fee. During that 3 days, I had an appointment with my local GM dealer and they did a complete inspection for me and told me that they saw nothing that would void any part of the warranty on it - it had 25k miles on it, so that gave me 11k miles to find any issues and have GM fix it. There were two damaged interior pieces that I knew that I would need to replace ( knob and an overhead lamp with a busted tab), but I saved about 10k off the going price at the dealership for the same vehicle on their used side. The car was 11 months old. over the past 3 years, we've put over 100k miles on the vehicle as our primary family vehicle and I could not have been happier with the purchase. For our next vehicle, I would certainly do it again since I saved a lot of cash and had a great experience. I don't know if I'd do it for a high performance sports car, but then again, if it's under warranty and your GM dealer checks it for mods or damage that could void the warranty I may consider it.

2SS verts for $29K? They must have had some miles on them as that is well below market value.

Edit: out of curiosity I did a quick search at Carmax Kenosha. There are 1SS verts (not 2ss)for 29k with 20k+ miles available.

I worked for a couple rental car companies in my younger days. Under no circumstances would I ever buy a previous rental car. I could type until my fingers are bloody about all the things I've seen done to rentals.

I owned a previous rental car once - I was in business school at the time and it is all I could afford. Transmission failed within about 3 months - luckily was under the balance of the factory warranty, so nothing out of pocket. Dealership said original transmission showed evidence of abuse and extreme overheating over it's short life - only lasted 16,000 miles. That car got the job done, but I wouldn't buy a former rental again. I kept it for another year, it had 29,000 miles on it when I traded it, I feel badly for whomever owned it next.
