Ok, so it has to be in gear. I would not suspect sway bars then, and I would not suspect Diff either...but that's just me, nor Shaft...again, i'm not a mechanic but it would seem to me if these were part of the issue, then it would occur while rolling backwards regardless if in gear or not.

Tranny would be my focus at this point.

just a follow up. I did replace the diff oil at 1600 miles (i do about 7k a year) and continued to have the pop noise. happy to say that about 3 months or so ago I could no longer here it. maybe just a break in period issue. no idea.
