I'll bet it has to do with physical alignment. The camera is simply screwed to the bumper. For instance, if the angle of the camera is off by only 5*, then at 4' behind the car, the lines will be 4" off-center. 10* corresponds to a 10" variance.

To really figure it out, put the car on a level-ish surface (driveway). Put tape down at the edge of the car (not edge of tires, but hold a string with a nut tied to the end against the fender and mark where it touches the ground). Then, move the car forward 4'. Have a friend put tape down where the lined are, then measure how far apart the lines are.

If you find that it's off to one side or the other, you can either try to just push on one side of the camera to shift it slightly. If that doesn't work, you can probably unscrew it and shim one side with a thin washer or rubber spacer.

But, it may be that it's purposefully wide on BOTH sides.
