I have had a lot of experience with plasti dip over the past few years and if used correctly, it definitely can be a great tool.

It's best use is for wheels, badges, accents, etc. You can definitely do full cars (and I have before) but it is a lot of work and depending on the size of the car, at least looking at $300-400 not including any tools/sprayers. However I have also had to remove plasti dip from a full car and it is not fun! The large panels are easy, but it will be in some small spots that are very difficult to remove as it won't be very thick.

All in all, it comes down to price, ease of application, and the longevity you are looking for.

$300-400 aint nothing compared to $3000-$4000 vinyl wrap though haha.

I had the same problem that you did, but I found this stuff by 3m called foam tape that you can lay down in the cracks of the doors, hood, and trunk so that way you dont get those spots.

In my opinion, a vinyl wrap is much more practical and gives awesome look to your car. My vinyl wrap project was installed by Gatorwraps and I am very satisfied!
