Never had this issue on my 2017. Even with the East Texas humidity.

Short answer science behind it - dew point. Air leaks out of defrost vent (confirmed by GM) even when defrost vent isn't selected. Air leaking out is lower than dew point outside. Window cools due to cooler air, dew forms on outside.

I too have had this problem (back when it was humid) and have been reading these threads regarding this. So, here's what I've come up with. I purchased a roll 1/8"x24"x36" of Neoprene thru Amazon (P/N W1322 Premium Neoprene Shop Pad +) for $13-$14. After multiple paper templates tracing the vent area I finally cut a piece of the neoprene to shape. I haven't had a chance to try it yet since it hasn't happened since the fall but here's a pic.

This problem doesn't just happen with our cars. I have seen this many times in other cars that I have had over the years. Yes, its a dewpoint problem. Cold defroster air cooling the windshield resulting in condensing on the outside in humid weather. I bet more then a few people have had their glasses fog up as soon as they get out of their car in humid weather. I have found adding a little heat to the defroster temp helps reduce the fogging.

Keep posting about this problem. Perhaps it will make GM address it with a proper fix. The fact that some people are satisfied by throwing some shit over it and pretending it's not a problem is sad. We shouldn't have to do that. I sit in line with hundreds of other cars on muggy summer mornings to get on the Air Force base. I am the only one with a fogged up windshield having to run my windshield wipers. It's not normal for cars to do this and a damn shame that 2 years into the redesign they haven't developed a fix for it.

Nobody is satisfied by "throwing some shit over it and pretending it's not a problem." Some of us would rather at least come up with some sort of fix so we're not blinded when half the windshield is fogged up and can't effing see. Because clearly waiting on GM isn't going to be a viable solution. How many years did it take for them to address that ignition issue of theirs? And how many people died due to that fault? If people want to wait for a fix and become a statistic, be my guest. I'm not waiting with bated breath for GM to fix this. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Right. In normal situations, yes. I don't want to be rude either... But I don't think you understand the issue before you posted. In this case, the condensation is being caused by cold AC air blowing on glass in humid environment which caused condensation. Just like how an ice cold glass of water sweat. The colder, the more condensation. Stop the cold or close the vent will stop condensation in this case.

What we have here is a instrument panel supplier that doesn't adjust actuators consistently.
GM - how about checking these ip's for mode door operation BEFORE installing them in the car. The units that do not seal mode doors properly should then be returned to the supplier. Asian manufacturers do this, and they usually don't get many more out-of -spec after the supplier gets a huge return. Or, find a new supplier. Let's make great even better! Before upsetting more customers. Before poor visibilty gets someone injured or worse. |
