Sport or track mode, over 5500 or so rpm, keep gas mashed, shift quickly...

I've made over 50 passes in my '16 SS and "no lift shifted" all of them. The car has never back fired a single time. It doesn't do anything different than any other car that i've power shifted. As soon as the clutch goes it, it winds to and bounces off the redline till I grab the next gear. I don't think the computer does much of anything in between shifts...

Then your car for some reason doesn't have no lift shift, or you are doing something to bypass it...when NLS is functioning it cuts spark so you don't bounce off the redline like you say your car does. That spark cut, combined with the injectors still firing leads to fuel getting dumped into the exhaust. That gives you the "backfire" sound...which is actually an afterfire. It sounds like a single gunshot...

Was your car an early build? Seems some '16s have it, others don't.

As you can see in this screen shot, this particular '16 SS has it, and it is active from the factory.
Bottom left of the image...click it so it goes full size.
